Notes: Neutron diffraction has been used to measure the vortex lattice scattering for YBa2Cu3O7. A square pattern is found when the field is applied along the c axis, while a triangular pattern is found when the field is applied well away from the c axis. High-resolution measurements for the square pattern show that the vortex lattice has long-range orientational order but only short-range positional order. The temperature dependence of the penetration depth is not that expected for a superconductor with a conventional s-wave BCS-type gap. Preliminary measurements for temperatures near the irreversibility line are consistent with the occurrence of melting of the vortex lattice or glass phase.

Notes: A flux-line lattice (FLL) was observed in a single crystal of Bi2.15Sr1.95CaCu2O8+x (BSCCO) using small-angle neutron scattering methods. The sample has a superconducting transition at 85 K. The flux-line lattice is observed to melt, evidenced by the rapid disappearance of diffracted intensity as the temperature is increased above a field-dependent melting temperature. Diffracted intensity due to the vortex lattice also falls off as the applied field is increased. It is believed that this is a manifestation of the transition of the three-dimensional flux lines into two-dimensional pancake vortices. The Bragg intensity of the FLL peak is inversely proportional to the fourth power of the London penetration depth (λL). Hence, the temperature (T) dependence of the order parameter can be measured quite accurately from the intensity of the Bragg spots at different temperatures. In BSCCO with an applied field of 50 mT, the measured T dependence appears linear. The low-T behavior is of great interest for an understanding of the underlying mechanism for superconductivity in these materials.

Notes: The resistance of the BF2+ ion implanted polycrystalline diamond film drifted higher with time when the diamond film was exposed in air. The reliable resistance of the implanted diamond film could be obtained after the heat treatment at high temperature under vacuum. Temperature dependence of the reliable resistance of the BF2+ ion implanted diamond film indicated two activation energies within the temperature range from room temperature to 400 °C. The effect of gas exposure on the resistance of the implanted diamond film was discussed.

Notes: Diamond deposition on an anisotropic etched Si and ion implanted Si surfaces have been examined here for the first time. Local facets on an anisotropic etched surface shows no nucleation of diamond. Synthetic diamond, in contrast, has been able to nucleate on an As+ or Si+ ion implanted Si substrate without diamond abrasive pretreatment. Selective deposition of diamond occurs only for low dose ion implantation, 100 keV 1014 cm−2, but not for high dose ion implantation, 100 KeV 1016 cm−2. Strain is proposed as the main reason for nucleation of diamond on the ion implanted Si substrates.

Notes: Abstract The reliability of ferrocement slabs subjected to cyclic thermal-shock loading induced by raindrops during service is investigated. The data are obtained experimentally by subjecting specimens to heating and wetting cycles and monitoring the residual first-crack strength at different periods. The imposed thermal-shock loads simulate actual service conditions and are estimated by monitoring the temperature of typical roofing slabs just before the commencement of rain over a period of time. The mean deterioration in strength obtained after correcting for curing effects due to ageing and temperature, as well as the uncertainty present, are used to assess the reliability of slabs having residual first-crack strengths above some prescribed values at different periods. The results indicate that ferrocement slabs posses good flexural resistance with respect to the cyclic loadings studied and are suitable for use as roofing elements.

Notes: Summary Let be thek-dimensional subspace spanned by the translates ϕ(·−2πj/k),j=0, 1, ...,k−1, of a continuous, piecewise smooth, complexvalued, 2π-periodic function ϕ. For a given functionf∈L 2(−π, π), its least squares approximantS kf from can be expressed in terms of an orthonormal basis. Iff is continuous,S kf can be computed via its discrete analogue by fast Fourier transform. The discrete least squares approximant is used to approximate Fourier coefficients, and this complements the works of Gautschi on attenuation factors. Examples of include the space of trigonometric polynomials where ϕ is the de la Valleé Poussin kernel, algebraic polynomial splines where ϕ is the periodic B-spline, and trigonometric polynomial splines where ϕ is the trigonometric B-spline.

Description / Table of Contents: Übersicht Es wird eine „finite element”-Methode vorgeschlagen zur Berechnung zweidimensionaler elastischplastischer Baukonstruktionen, die einem ebenen Spannungszustand mit monoton wachsender Last unterworfen sind.
Notes: Summary A finite element technique for the elastic-plastic analysis of two dimensional structures subjected to conditions of plane stress and monotonically increasing loads is presented. The complete load deformation history as well as the propagation of the yield zones in the structure up to plastic collapse are studied. The material is assumed to be elastic-perfectly plastic and yielding is governed by Tresca yield condition. Plastic stress-strain relations for the sides and corners of Tresca yield condition are derived in terms of the components of the stresses and strains along a fixed reference coordinate system and the direction of the principal stress. The load is applied in small increments and the principal stress direction for each plastic element during a load increment is determined by an interpolation technique which leads to stresses that satisfy the yield condition. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the accuracy of the results obtained by the proposed method.

Notes: Abstract In this article we construct a lattice of points which lie onk+1 pencils of hyperplanes in the projectivek-space, where, with a suitable choice of coordinate system, simple equations of the hyperplanes are obtained. This enables us to construct an interpolation formula on the projectivek-space from which interpolating polynomials on a general class of lattices in the Euclideank-space are obtained via a projective transformation.
