Notes: Summary In a study in mild hypertensives, the impact of mental and physical stress on plasma epinephrine (E), norepinephrine (NE), and on their ratio (NE/E) was evaluated. The effect of twoβ-adrenoceptor blocking drugs, atenolol and bopindolol, on plasma catecholamine levels was also examined. Each stressful stimulus significantly increased the NE and E levels compared to rest. The increase was progressive from mental stress, through the handgrip test to the treadmill test. A slight decrease in the NE/E ratio was observed following mental stress and the handgrip test, while this ratio increased during the treadmill test. No significant impact of beta blocking treatment on catecholamine levels was observed under any test condition.

Notes: Abstract The structure of an isolated vortex line, and the lower critical fieldH c 1, is calculated by means of the generalized Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory for arbitrary values of the GL-parameterk(≧1/√2) and the mean free pathl at temperaturesT in the vicinity ofT c . The free energy functional including the corrections of order [1−(T/T c )] to the GL-functional is derived exactly. The corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations determining the zero-order (GL) contributions and the corrections of order [1−(T/T c )] to the order parameter,f(r), and the superfluid velocity,v(r), have been solved numerically. The shapes of the first-order corrections off(r), v(r), and the magnetic field,h(r) are found to depend markedly, for a given value ofκ, on a second parameter,α=0.882(ξ 0 /l) (whereξ 0 is theBCS-coherence-distance). The deviations from the GL-solutions become largest forh(r) at parameter valuesk≈ 1 andα ≈ 0(the deviation ofh(0) is about 6% atT=0.9T c forκ=1 andα=0). The ratioH c1/H c (where the thermodynamic criticalH c has the BCS-temperature-dependence) is found to increase slightly in the “clean” limit (α=0), and to decrease slightly in the “dirty” limit (α=∞) asT decreases (the variation ofH c 1/H c is always less than 3% for arbitrary values ofκ andα asT decreases fromT c to 0.9T c ).

Notes: Abstract The theory of Abrikosov of the immediate subcritical region in the mixed state is extended by means of the generalized Ginzburg-Landau theory to temperatures belowT c and arbitrary mean free pathl of the electrons. The results for the magnetization and the free energy can still be presented in the form derived by Abrikosov apart from the fact thatκ is replaced by a new parameterκ 2(T). The slope of the curveκ 2/κ versust=T/T c att=1 is found to decrease monotonically from −0.105 to — (1.367-0.136κ −2) asl increases from zero to infinity. The results for short mean free paths are consistent with experiment, in particular,κ 2 is always larger thanκ in the vicinity ofT c . But the experimental temperature dependence ofκ 2/κ in pure Nb is much higher than the theoretical one.

Notes: Abstract In the first part of the paper we derive expressions of the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) type for the local tunneling density of states of superconducting alloys. These expressions are quite generally applicable at high excitation energies. One can see immediately that the density of states,N(r, ω), at any positionr and high energiesω is always larger than the local BCS density of states if the space dependence of the order parameter is governed by the GL-equation. This effect is largest for long mean free pathsl. In the second part of the paper we calculate the spatial average of the density of states,¯N, at all energiesω for a lattice of vortex lines in a magnetic field slightly below the upper critical field. The resulting curve of [¯N− N(0)]/N(0) versus co shows no gap and has a zero at about the gap value in zero field. Its value at ω=0 depends onl like ln(ξ0/l) for l≫ξ0 [N(0) denotes the normal density of states, and ξ0 is the BCS coherence length].

Notes: Summary Twenty-eight patients with classical or definite rheumatoid arthritis were randomly divided into two groups of fourteen patients each. All patients were treated once a day with mud packs derived from the Dead Sea heated to 40°C and applied over the four extremities, neck and back for 20 minutes. Group 1 was treated with the true mud packs and Group 2 with washed out and less concentrated mud packs. The study was double blind and of two weeks duration. All patients were evaluated by one rheumatologist both before treatment and two weeks later at the end of the treatment period. Follow-up evaluations were made one and three months after conclusion of the treatment. The clinical indices evaluated included duration of morning stiffness, hand-grip strength, activities of daily living, patient's own assessment of disease activity, number of active joints and the Ritchie index. A statistically significant improvement (p〈0.01 or p〈0.05) was observed in Group 1 only in most of the clinical indices, lasting between 1 to 3 months.
