    Notes: YBa2Cu3O7 films can be grown on different substrates by the off-axis ac magnetron sputtering method. Films in the ab orientation tend to grow at a lower substrate temperature than c-axis films. However, as the temperature is lowered, all the substrates we have tested, except for SrTiO3, form amorphous phases that degrade the quality of the films being made. In this manuscript it is shown that if a thin layer of c-axis film is deposited on the substrate first, then it effectively reduces the formation of the amorphous phases and improves the film quality significantly.

    Notes: Using Raman scattering we have observed a phototransformation of C60 films on Si(100) from a face-centered-cubic (fcc) phase to a second solid phase leaving the C60 molecules intact. Furthermore, photoassisted oxygen diffusion into the deep bulk is detected using alpha resonance scattering. The Raman spectrum for oxygen-doped C60 is found to be similar to the result for oxygen-free fcc C60, and oxygen is found to harden the film against phototransformation.

    Notes: Amorphous Al2O3 thin films were grown on Si(100) and glass substrates by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition using aluminum acetylacetonate and water vapor as source materials. Water vapor played an important role in the oxidation process and produced carbon-free, pure Al2O3 films. The deposition temperature could be lowered to 230 °C. The films were characterized by means of x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, and ellipsometry.

    Notes: Abstract Thin films of pure copper have been deposited on glass and Si(100) substrates using copper acetylacetonate [Cu(acac)2] and copper HexaFluoroAcetylacetonate [Cu(HFA)2] sources. A thermal, cold-wall, reduced pressure (3325–5985 Pa) Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) process was employed. The effect of H2O vapor on the grain size, deposition rate, and resistivity was examined. Electrical resistivities of 2.4 μω cm for copper films deposited on Si(100) and 3.44 μω cm for copper films deposited on glass at substrate temperatures of 265° C and a [Cu(acac)2] source temperature of 147° C with the use of H2O vapor were measured. When [Cu(HFA)2] was used, the substrate temperature was 385° C and the source temperature was 85° C. An activation energy for the copper film deposition process was calculated to be 22.2 kJ/mol in the case of the [Cu(acac)2] source. A deposition rate of 11 nm/min was obtained with Cu(acac)2 as the source and the rate was 44.4 nm/min with the Cu(HFA)2 source; both were obtained with the use of H2O vapor. No selectivity was observed with either source for either substrate. The deposited films were fully characterized using XRD, LVSEM, SAXPS, and RBS.

    Notes: Abstract Laser microprobe mass spectrometry (LMMS) detection limits for mercury have been determined using mercury-doped Spurr's tissue embedding medium. Actual mercury concentrations were confirmed via INAA. Procedures have also been developed to measure lithium and indium concentrations in thin films of polymerized Spurr's samples via PIGE and PIXE. These elements are currently being investigated as laser power density internal standards in the analysis of human tissue for studies of trace element involvement in neurological diseases.

    Notes: Abstract Simultaneous PIXE/PIGE was used to determine the concentration of 20 elements including N, O, F, Na, Mg, P, Ca (PIGE) and Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, Ba, Pb (PIXE) in a number of animal and human rib samples, marrow, and the IAEA CRM Animal Bone (H-5). Samples and standards were bombarded with 2.5 and 4.0 MeV external proton beams. The minimum detection limits for most of the minor and trace elements ranged from 0.5 to 1.5 ppm. The sample preparation procedure for the nondestructive instrumental analysis of bone is discussed in detail. The analysis method is fast, nondestructive and offers selective analysis of the cortical and cancellous surface of the same bone sample.

    Notes: Abstract A major objective of any laboratory course should be to stimulate students to extend their knowledge of the subject to specific problems. In the radiochemistry laboratory course at the University of Kentucky, we encourage students to make the transition from the textbook or laboratory manual to the “real” world through the use of a special project. This project, which typically replaces two normal laboratory exercises, is a short research problem that the student independently develops and executes. An overview of the incorporation of special projects into our radiochemistry laboratory course is presented.
