Notes: Capillary electrophoretic methods with normal and reversed electroosmotic flows (EOF) and indirect UV detection were developed for the separation of fatty acids. Rapid separation of acids up to C12 was achieved via reversed EOF using 30% acetone, a cationic surfactant and 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid as carrier electrolyte. Analysis of acids up to C18 was feasible by normal EOF with 60% acetonitrile and trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid as carrier. Also investigated was the influence of the concentration of various organic solvents on the magnitude and direction of the EOF and on the solubility of the fatty acid solutes. The reversed EOF method was applied to the analysis of acids in fat hydrolysates.

Notes: We report on the first application of Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry to the very highly charged ions produced in the high-energy electron beam ion trap (SuperEBIT) at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Initial results are described, and spectra are presented from ions as highly charged as Cs53+.

Notes: A compilation of 13C NMR chemical shifts for 13 pairs of 3- and 5-cyano-substituted pyrazole regioisomers is reported. All of the ring carbon and cyano carbon 13C chemical shifts show a regular, predictable correlation with the particular isomer, whether 3-cyano or 5-cyano. These shifts occurred in very narrow ranges, precluding any confusion of assignment within the group of compounds studied. x-ray crystallographic analysis was performed on one of the samples.

Notes: In a test experiment carried out in a small compact electroless plating facility, the concentrations of hypophosphite and phosphite in a nickel deposition bath of the Kanigen type were monitored on-line with a dispersive Raman spectrometer. From the results, which agreed with off-line Fourier transform (FT) IR data within ca. 10%, the molar amounts of nickel, hypophosphite and phosphite consumed and formed were calculated and compared with the stoichiometry of the nickel plating process adopted. In addition, nickel bath samples were also measured with an FT Raman spectrometer to compare the performances of both Raman techniques with a view to their application to aqueous solutions.
