Notes: CO adsorption on Ni{110} and on hydrogen precovered Ni{110} surfaces at 180 K has been studied by FT-RAIRS. On a clean Ni{110} surface CO adsorbs at on-top sites upto a coverage of 0.7 ML. At higher coverages the on-top CO band at 2060 cm−1 decreases in intensity with a concomitant increase in a band at 1960 cm−1 which shifts up in frequency. The (2×1)p2mg structure at 1.0 ML CO coverage shows a single band at 1998 cm−1 attributed to CO tilted at bridged sites. FT-RAIRS of CO adsorption on H precovered Ni{110} surfaces shows complex CO site switching within different CO and H coverage regimes. A model is presented involving compression of H into islands of high coverage and both mixed H and CO and unmixed CO islands are formed. CO adsorbs in the unmixed CO islands the same as that on clean Ni{110}. Within the mixed H/CO islands the first layer nickel atoms reconstruct and a new hydrogen desorption state is observed. The CO site switching observed by FT-RAIRS within the various H and CO coverage regimes is discussed in terms of a dominant indirect interaction.

Notes: Tofu was prepared from samples of Amsoy 71 and Vinton or Vinton 81 soybeans grown in different environments. Relationships between soybean, soymilk and tofu protein, lipid, phytic acid, calcium, copper and iron were examined. All components except lipid in soybeans were significantly correlated with the same component in soymilk, but only phytic acid, copper and iron were significantly correlated in soybeans and tofu (moist basis). When relationships were examined on a dry basis, soybean and tofu protein were significantly correlated (r = 0.93).Soybean phytic acid was significantly correlated with tofu calcium (r = 0.90). Tofu calcium and hardness (r = 0.73) and springiness (r = 0.83). were significantly related, and tofu protein was significantly related to fracturability (r = 0.75).The higher-protein varieties (Vinton/Vinton 81) generally produced tofu that had a higher protein content and a firmer, more springy texture than that of the Amsoy 71 beans. Phytic acid may preferentially bind the calcium coagulant, altering the curd structure and the yield, composition and texture of the resulting tofu.

Notes: Summary In addition to being a physiologically active tracer of CBF, xenon (Xe) in subanesthetic concentrations produces a relatively mild lowering of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the blood and elevation of transcranial Doppler (TCD) velocity. The addition of small concentrations of CO2 (0.4–1.2%) to the inhaled mixture produced no measurable effect on end tidal (Pet) CO2 or TCD velocity. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) alterations induced by Xe are minimized by allowing PetCO2 to fall, permitting quantitative measurement of CBF by the Xe/CT CBF method.

Notes: Abstract The impact of continous arteriovenous haemodiafiltration (CAVHD) on nitrogen, lipid and carbohydrate balance was studied in 9 parenterally fed critically ill patients with acute renal failure. The effects on carbohydrate delivery of varying dialysate glucose concentrations or flow rates were also investigated. The total daily nitrogen loss was a mean of 24.1 g (95% CI 20.9–27.3 g/24 h) with non-urea nitrogen losses of 7.6 g (95% CI 5.6–9.6 g/24h). Glucose delivery was a mean 5.8 g/h with a dialysate glucose concentration of 1.5% and a flow rate of 1l/h (95% CI 4.5–7.0 g/h). Carbohydrate delivery increased with increased dialysate glucose concentration (mean 11.4 g/h with 2.5% glucose: 95% CI 9.6–13.1 g/h; mean 14.9 g/h with a 4.25% concentration: 95% CI 10.9–19; and with increased dialysate flow rates (mean 9.6 g/h, 95% CI 6.8–12.4 g/h, using 2 l/h of 1.5% glucose). Only trace amounts of cholesterol and/or triglycerides were detected in occasional ultradiafiltrate samples. CAVHD has an important impact on nitrogen and carbohydrate balance, but not on lipid status. Knowledge of these interactions is crucial for the rational planning of nutritional strategies in the critically ill.

Notes: Abstract Anomolous spikes in the loss spectrum of practical depressed-cladding fibres with a finite cladding and absorbing jacket can be explained in terms of a combination of three effects — the excitation conditions, the absorption behaviour of core and cladding modes, and the slight variation in the fibre diameter along its length.

Notes: Abstract We investigated the design features of adiabatic, weakly guiding optical fibre tapers for nonlinear device applications. In general, where the fibre taper ‘core’ and ‘cladding’ are of different material nonlinearities, the nonlinear effects that can be achieved depend critically on the taper parameters. For optical switches a suitable choice of taper parameters minimizes the power × length product for nonlinear operation. The maximum effective utilization of the nonlinear cladding material was found to be 21.3%. Also, nonlinear effects can be totally suppressed with an appropriate choice of design, enabling nonlinear effects that are undesirable in some applications to be avoided.

Notes: Abstract The excess loss across an acute-angle symmetric X-junction composed of two weakly guiding single-mode buried channel waveguides of square core cross-section is shown to be very small provided the junction angle is greater than a few degrees. Numerical and approximate analytical results are presented, as well as a simple criterion for the onset of cross-talk as the junction angle decreases.
