Notes: WASH 1 is composed of a defined series of six seastates for a yearly return period; the two lowests seastates 1 and 2 being eliminated, because they do not influence the fatigue life of offshore structures, and the three highest seastates 8, 9 and 10 were combined. The sequence and the duration of the resultant six seastates correspond also to long term observations in the North Sea. A generated load history with the power spectrum of the strain measuremnts used as a basis, is the result for each seastate. The return period of the standardized load history WASH 1 decided upon is 5 × 105 cycles coresponding to one year of wave loads. It is fixed sequence of peaks recorded on tape. Testing frequency and signal shape are optional. The basis for the derivation of standardized load histories is always formed by strain histories measured in operation. WASH 1 was derived on the basis of strain measurements on the FRIGG DP2 platform of IFREMER, Brest, supplemented by measurements of Germanischer Lloyd, Hamburg, on the Research Platform NORDSEE. As even comprehensive measurements can only be samples over a limited period of time, the strain measuremments were supported by the results of long-term observations of seastates in the North Sea.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract. In most ventilators used in anaesthesia tidal volume delivered during mechanical ventilation is different from the tidal volume preset at the respirator on the basis of respirator and circuit compliance and gas compression during inspiration. The error in ventilation due to the compressed volume is especially significant clinically when the tidal volume is very small or when the airway pressure is very high. In newborns and neonates in particular, decreasing lung compliance during a surgical procedure may contribute to marked hypoventilation. We therefore investigated ventilation in newborn piglets during decreasing lung compliance induced by tension pneumothorax. We used the anaesthesia ventilator CICERO (Dräger, Lübeck, Germany) and the SERVO 900 C ventilator (Siemens-Elema, Sweden). Materials and methods. Two anaesthesia ventilators, the CICERO (group I, n=8) and the SERVO ventilators (group II, n=8) were investigated following randomized selection in a group of 16 newborn piglets (Table 1). After normoventilation for 60 min a tension pneumothorax at +10 mbar was induced. After 15 min the pneumothorax was increased to +20 mbar and maintained at this level for the rest of the study. When hypercapnia (PaCO2〉45 mm Hg) resulted, the respiratory rate was increased by +10/min after 15 min with pneumothorax at +20 mbar. When hypercapnia continued, the respiratory rate was increased again 25 min and if necessary also 35 min after the induction of pneumothorax at 20 mbar. After normoventilation for 60 min (T1) (Table 2), after 15 min with pneumothorax at +10 mbar (T2) and after 15 min (T3), 25 min (T4), 35 min (T5) and 45 min (T6) with pneumothorax at +20 mbar the following parameters were obtained: central venous (CVP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), arterial (PaCO2 and end-tidal CO2 tension (PetCO2), peak inspiratory pressure (PIP), respiratory frequency (RF) and expiratory tidal (Vtex) and minute volume (VE). Results. In group I the pneumothorax resulted in a significantly smaller increase in PaCO2 (43.3±6.2 mm Hg) than in group II (Fig. 1), and hypercapnia was present in only 3 piglets. Vtex (Fig. 2), VE (Fig. 3) and PIP (Fig. 5) increased significantly, with significantly higher values than in group II, while PetCO2 (Fig. 6) decreased significantly. In group II the pneumothorax was attributed to a significant increase in PaCO2 and a marked hypercapnia in all piglets (PaCO2 61.2±5.9 mm Hg) (Fig. 1). Vtex (Fig. 2) and VE (Fig. 3) remained unchanged, while PIP (Fig. 5) and PetCO2 (Fig. 6) increased. Following the increase in RF (Fig. 4) in all piglets, Vtex and VE increased and PaCO2 and PetCO2 decreased. Conclusions. During ventilation of neonates with the SERVO ventilator a decrease in lung compliance will cause hypoventilation and hypercapnia. This is reflected by an increase in peak inspiratory pressure and can be corrected by increasing the respiratory rate. In contrast, the CICERO is able to preserve ventilation by an internal correction for gas compression, but it does not guarantee normoventilation in all cases. In neither group does the end-tidal PCO2 reflect the true ventilation during decreasing lung compliance, so that arterial blood gas analysis seems to be mandatory for the diagnosis of hypercapnia in such situations.
Notes: Zusammenfassung.

Notes: Abstract The fatigue crack growth behaviour of 7050 T73651 high strength aluminium alloy that was originally developed for the aircraft industry was investigated in this study. The tests were conducted by using C-T specimens machined in six orientations under the action of constant amplitude sinusoidal load cycles. The tests were first carried out in laboratory air and then repeated in salt-water fog of a 5% NaCl solution to observe the effect of the environment on the fatigue crack growth behaviour. The experimental results showed that the fatigue life, maximum stress intensity range and the fatigue crack growth rate of the specimens were seriously affected by the environment. The severity of the effect, on the other hand, was observed to be dependent on the orientation. The strongest orientation was determined to be L-S, while the weakest was S-L.

Notes: Summary The regulatory effects of pindolol and celiprolol on cardiac β-adrenoceptor density were studied in vivo in order to assess the subtype selectivity of their partial agonistic activity (PAA). The substances were continuously administered to rats for 1 week by means of implanted osmotic minipumps. The density of β-adrenoceptor subtypes were estimated from ICYP saturation binding experiments performed on cardiac ventricular plasma membranes in the presence of a highly selective antagonist (CGP 20172 A or ICI 118,551). Both antagonists were employed at concentrations as high as to block one subtype only without affecting the complementary subtype. For control purposes, rats were also treated with isoprenaline (0.4 mg/kg/h) and propranolol (0.15 mg/kg/h), or vehicle. Pindolol (0.036 mg/kg/h) and celiprolol (0.36 mg/kg/h) reduced the density of ventricular β2-adrenoceptors by 46% and 23%, respectively, which — in the case of pindolol — was significant when compared to the non-treated controls. Both compounds, however, produced a small, but distinct increase in the number of β1-adrenoceptors by approximately 26%. This finding is in contrast to the propranolol-induced upregulation of both β1- and β2-adrenoceptors by approximately 80%. Since supramaximal doses of each drug were administered, a significant smaller increase of β1-adrenoceptors by pindolol and celiprolol —as compared to the increase produced by propranolol — can be interpreted as evidence for a PAA of pindolol and celiprolol on β1-adrenoceptors as well. Isoprenaline as a full agonist caused a marked loss of of both β-adrenoceptor subtypes. Although it exhibits equal affinity at both subtypes the decrease amounted to 80% of the β2- but only to 54% of the β1-adrenoceptors density. This indicates that the down-regulation of cardiac β-adrenoceptors in general seems to be more pronounced at the β2-than at the β1-adrenoceptors population. We conclude that the subtype desensitization pattern of agents with intrinsic activity precludes the determination of subtype-selectivity, since β1- and β2-adrenoceptors appear to differ in their sensitivity presumably as a result of subtype specific baseline desensitization produced by endogenous catecholamines.
