Notes: [Auszug] ALTHOUGH several distinguished and usually critical scientists were well aware that Twort was an exceptionally imaginative and able research worker, he never gained widespread recognition. One reason was the peculiar structure of the Brown Animal and Sanatory Institution of which he was ...

Notes: [Auszug] SIR - By using the title "Sperm whale", Daedalus' research team emphasizes that it thinks only of aggression as a factor in sperm competition1. But the race is not to the swift. Having reached the neighbourhood of an ovum, sperm must bore through a mass of cumulus cells. When one gets into the ...

Notes: [Auszug] "WHERE there is no vision, the people perish"; or, as a marginal note in the better bibles puts it, "will become unruly". Many recent events justify the suggested variant, but the first is more relevant in the present context. That biblical exegisis comes naturally because ...

Notes: [Auszug] SIR-By using the title 'What happened?' to R. A. Slepecky's letter1, you seem to be inviting further comment on the career of F. W. Twort. Notes: [Auszug] WHEN we found that the infect i vity and filter-ability of preparations of-tobacco mosaic virus Were reduced and the anisotropy of flow Was increased by chemical methods of isolation, we suggested that linear aggregation had taken place1'2. This is now confirmed by Loring, Lauffer and Stanley, but ...

Notes: [Auszug] SPECIFIC proteins, believed to be the viruses themselves, have been isolated from plants infected separately with each of seven viruses of the tobacco mosaic and potato virus ‘X’ groups1–4. Although these proteins have some properties in common with crystalline materials, and can ...

Notes: Abstract Loss of β carotene from moist leaf protein stored with a preservative, is closely simulated by the destruction of β carotene by acetone extracted chloroplasts (stroma) suspended in acetone containing 30% water. During this exposure, stroma lose destructive ability, but it is restored by mercaptoacetate and other reducing agents. Stroma can therefore be used repeatedly. This catalytic process is activated by removing intrinsic inhibitors, predominantly calcium, by extraction at pHs less than 4, or by alum. The objective is to find inhibitors which would be acceptable in a food. That restricts choice. Citrate, tartarate and phosphate are among the more attractive possibilities.
