Notes: Transmission Móssbauer spectra of binary coprecipitated nickel(II)-iron(III) hydroxides (molar ratios 9:1 and 4:1) are analysed and compared with the results of AES analyses of their surface composition. A correlation between the data of the above techniques has been noted, indicating a redistribution of the components (i.e. Ni and Fe) in the surface layers, the latter being enriched with iron(III) as compared to the bulk. The results obtained are in good agreement with an excellent electrocatalytic activity of composite Ni-Fe hydroxide systems towards anodic oxygen evolution in alkaline electrolytes, taking into account a distinctly exhibited ‘surface’ electrocatalytic effect of ferric species on the nickel hydroxide electrode in the anodic oxygen evolution process revealed previously. Transmission Móssbauer spectroscopy has been shown to be a highly effective probe sensitive both to various bulk and surface effects related to the solid phases studied.

Notes: A quantum molecular dynamics study of the interface formation of the Al/GaAs(110) and In/GaAs(110) interfaces has been performed. It is found that, at very low coverages, both Al and In atoms chemisorb on threefold coordinated sites, bonded to two As atoms and one Ga atom. The metal atoms attract each other on the GaAs surface and tend to form islands. The electronic structure for one monolayer is found to be semiconducting for both In and Al. The results presented here are consistent with the temperature-dependent evolution of Fermi level from the very low metal coverage limit to the overlayer limit for the deposition of In and Al on GaAs(110).

Notes: The combination of concepts of two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy with the well-known field step electron–electron double resonance (ELDOR) method offers a practical route to recording 2D ELDOR spectra covering the full spectral range needed for electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of nitroxide spin labels in the solid state. The 2D ELDOR pattern provides information about molecular reorientation measured in real time, the anisotropies of electron phase, and electron spin-lattice relaxation as well as nuclear spin-lattice relaxation all of which are connected with the detailed geometry of the molecular reorientation. Thus, in 2D ELDOR the same electron spin probes the motional behavior over a wide range of correlation times from 10−4 to 10−12 s. An efficient algorithm for simulating 2D ELDOR spectra is derived, based on analytical solutions of the spin relaxation behavior for small-angle fluctuations and offers a means of quantitatively analyzing experimental data. As an example, the motion of nitroxide spin labels in a liquid-crystalline side-group polymer well below its glass transition is determined as a β-relaxation process with a mean angular amplitude of 5° and a distribution of correlation times with a mean correlation time of 0.9×10−10 s and a width of 2.5 decades.

Notes: Numerical evidence is reported of the quasiregular power spectra in the strongly chaotic system of coupled Morse and harmonic oscillators with the 1:2 frequency ratio. The spectra are shown to consist of a "regular'' part, characterized by sharp peaks and a chaotic one which resembles a smooth chaotic background. The regular part does not seem to be related to the visible islands of stable motion as is the case of the standard map. The observed regularity of the spectra is shown to be associated with the repeated trapping of the chaotic trajectory by the localized regions of marginal stability. The appearance of such regions is the direct consequence of the global tangent bifurcations near the borderline of the system. The analysis of the spectra of local Lyapunov exponents and periodic orbits analysis seem to account for the most important qualitative features of the underlying chaotic dynamics. In particular we show that a relatively small number of low-period saddle-center pairs born in tangent bifurcations is sufficient to characterize marginally stable sets and to determine their recurrence properties as well.

Notes: A dissipation-modified Boussinesq-like system of equations governing three-dimensional long wavelength Marangoni–Bénard oscillatory convection in a shallow layer heated from the air side is presented. Solitary waves and their oblique and head-on interactions are considered, thus leading to results that compare well with available experimental data.

Notes: Kolmogorov's refined similarity hypothesis (RSH) was challenged by Hosokawa and Yamamoto [Phys. Fluids A 4, 457 (1992)] on the basis of a direct numerical simulation data set at Rλ〈100. The authors considered that their results were "a clear case of violation of the RSH.'' However, the hypothesis was proposed for very high Reynolds number flows and is not expected to apply at the low Reynolds numbers typical of current simulations. The Hosokawa and Yamamoto tests have been repeated with a high Reynolds number (Rλ≈3.2×103) experimental data set. The results are in good agreement with the Kolmogorov RSH.

Notes: It is suggested that sound wave propagation along stochastic magnetic field lines contributes to particle transport, described by a quasilinear diffusion coefficient D=Dmcs, where Dm is the magnetic field line diffusion coefficient [Nucl. Fusion 6, 297 (1966)]. In this calculation, the perturbed magnetic field δB is taken to be specified, either due to global modes or due to external perturbations, such as toroidal ripple, divertor coils, or an ergodic magnetic limiter. The transport, which proceeds by the propagation of electrostatic sound waves along the stochastic field lines, is not intrinsically ambipolar. The importance of this process is that it represents the shorting out of a radial electric field in the presence of δBr, and therefore provides a mechanism for damping of plasma rotation, and may therefore be an important factor for L–H transition in tokamaks. This part of particle transport and momentum transport are therefore related and are of the same order of magnitude. However, experiments (without an ergodic magnetic limiter) appear to indicate that another source of particle transport, perhaps by E×B advection due to electrostatic modes, can dominate the particle transport due to sound wave propagation along stochastic field lines.

Notes: The fractal properties of isovelocity surfaces are studied in three high Reynolds number (Rλ≈2.0×102–3.2×103) laboratory shear flows using the standard box-counting method. The fractal dimension D=−d(log Nr)/d(log r) was estimated within the range of box sizes r from several Kolmogorov scales up to several integral scales (Nr is the number of boxes with size r required to cover the line intersection of an isovelocity surface). The inertial subrange was of particular interest in this investigation. Measurements were carried out for external intermittency factors γ≈0.6–1.0. The data were processed using threshold levels U±2.5u' (U and u' denote mean and rms values of longitudinal velocity). Over the parameters studied, no wide range of constant fractal dimension was found. On the other hand, the accuracy of constant fractal dimension approximation with D≈0.4 over the inertial subranges was shown to be similar to that of the Kolmogorov [Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 30, 301 (1941)] "two-thirds law.''
