    Notes: AC dielectric properties and thermally stimulated polarization (TSP) and depolarization (TSD) currents were studied in a series of CaCO3-filled polypropylene composites. The filler content (0 to 50 weight percent) and the average particle size (3.0 to 16.1 μm) at constant filler content (30 weight percent) were varied in separate groups of samples. In a third group of samples the filler (20 to 40 weight percent) was surface treated with stearates. The AC dielectric behavior of composites containing untreated fillers is largely determined by a small amount of adsorbed water. Upon heating, the dielectric properties show maxima (increasing with decreasing frequency) which disappear on cooling. In the case of stearate-treated fillers the dielectric loss level is higher, the dispersion and loss curves on heating reflect a combination of dipolar and protonic processes with water desorption. In the dry state the onset of an audio frequency relaxation process is observed in the pre-melting zone. The thermally stimulated currents of the composites containing treated and untreated fillers are also different. In the case of the untreated fillers the TSP curves show maxima indicating water desorption which are increasingly intense and roughly exponential with filler content. The high temperature conductivity and the intensity of the pre-melting depolarization peak pass through a minimum as a function of filler content. Above 20 weight percent filler content the activation energy of high temperature conductivity decreases. In the case of the surface treated samples, the thermally stimulated response is different for “wet” and dried samples. The dry samples exhibit a relaxation between the amorphous and crystalline transitions of the matrix polymer which is probably due to interfacial relaxation caused by the enhanced surface conductivity of the stearate-treated fillers.

    Notes: Molecular weights were studied by gel permeation chromatography of derivatized poly(α-tetrahydrothiophenio para-xylylene) chloride produced by aqueous or methanolic base-induced polymerization of 1,4-bis(tetrahydrothiopheniomethyl) benzene dichloride, both with and without a variety of added polymerization inhibiting agents. Efficient radical scavenging agents such as 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinoxyl and hydrogen atom donor 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylaniline reduced the degree of polymerization of the reactive α-(tetrahydrothiophenium chloride)-para-xylylene intermediate produced in this chemistry, and in some cases completely suppressed formation of high polymer. These two traps did not affect the equilibrium production of the para-xylylene by UV-Vis spectral analysis; hence they must affect the subsequent polymerization chain propagation steps in the mechanism. Electron spin resonance studies of polymerization in the presence of 0.00025 equiv of TEMPO showed disappearance of the spin label, a result consistent with a radical scavenging process. The results suggest that production of high molecular weight poly(α-tetrahydrothiophenio para-xylylene) chloride proceeds through a radical chain propagation sequence. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Abstract Experiments were conducted to (1) determine whether the electroantennogram (EAG) can detect differences among the responses of antennae from males derived from the three strains ofOstrinia nubilalis (Hübner), and (2) characterize the EAG responses of each strain to isomeric forms of the natural pheromone, (E)- and (Z)-11-tetradecen-1-ol acetate (TDA), and analogs possessing differences in the terminal alkyl group, cyclopropyl (CPA), ortert-butyl (TBA). EAG responses differed among the strains in two ways: (1) Antennae fromZZ males always produced an EAG to (Z)-TDA with an extended duration of response. This “signature” EAG response was found to be unique to the antennal response ofZZ males to (Z)-TDA, thus providing a relatively easy method of distinguishing liveZZ males fromEE orZE males. Correlated with this longer EAG response was a longer disadaptation time, i.e., the EAG response ofZZ antennae disadapted more slowly (ca. 10 min) than the response ofEE antennae. (2) Strain differences in the relative EAG amplitudes to isomers and analogs were observed at the stimulus amounts eliciting the peak EAG amplitude as follows: TDA ≥ CPA 〉 TBA forZZ males and both isomers; TDA 〉 CPA ≥ TBA and CPA ≥ TDA 〉 TBA forEE males and theE andZ isomers, respectively; CPA 〉 TBA ≥ TDA forZE males and both isomers. Dose—response relationships were seen for all compounds if amplitude (“peak height”) of the EAG was used as a measure of response. However, if width of the EAG at half the peak height (“peak width”) was used, then only theZZ antennal response to (Z)-TDA resulted in a meaningful dose-response relationship. For all strains, the EAG amplitudes elicited by theZ isomers of any of the tested compounds were greater than those elicited by the correspondingE isomers. Therefore, correlations between the relative EAG and upwind flight responses were observed in theZZ (r = 0.86) andZE (r = 0.80) strains but were not correlated in theEE strain (r = 0.18). Temporal studies showed that adaptation, not postexcision deterioration, was responsible for the observed decreases in the EAG amplitude after repetitive stimulation or after stimulation with amounts in a descending order. Disa-daptation required at least 20 min for a moderate dose (10 μg for 1 sec). Developmental studies showed that antennae from 2-day-old adults had the greatest EAG response.

    Notes: Thermally stimulated creep compliance, differential scanning calorimetric behavior, thermal degradation, AC dielectric permittivity and loss (between 120 Hz and 100 kHz) and thermally stimulated polarization and aepolarization currents were studied in a cycloaliphatic epoxy resin (B), in a conventional bisphenol-A-diglycidyl ester type epoxy resin (C) and in composites consisting of: resin B/wollastonite (B/W), resin B/quartz (B/Q) and resin C/wollastonite (C/W). The filler content was 60 wt%. Resin B exhibited higher Tg and lower rubbery deformability than resin C due to its more compact structure. Fillers reduced the rubbery deformation and thermal expansion and shifted the transition temperatures by a few degrees. The shift depended on the method used. Composites B/W and C/W exhibited higher thermal stability than the corresponding pure resins, while sample B/Q was less stable than resin B. Resins B and C exhibited a low temperature β transition (in the case of resin B a doublet) and a high temperature α or glass transition. AC dielectric losses were fairly similar in samples B and B/W, while the high temperature loss of sample B/Q was determined by a space charge process probably due to the matrix/filler interface. In samples C and C/W the α transition is visible but it is superposed on a strong space charge process due to the resin/electrode interface. Thermally stimulated currents show a behavior qualitatively in agreement with the AC results but the very low effective frequency and the nonlinear field strength dependence of the space charge processes cause some minor differences.
