Notes: Abstract Single crystals of iodine-intercalated C60 have been examined by transmission electron microscopy. Tilting series of Electron Diffraction Patterns (EDP) confirm that it has a simple hexagonal structure with c/a≈1 in accordance with the results of X-ray diffraction, which allows higher precision c/a=1.0024. Cooling and heating experiments were performed in the vacuum of the microscope to investigate the order — disorder phenomena. High-Resolution Electron Microscopy (HREM) images and electron diffraction patterns reveal that the c/2-displacement along the c-direction plays an important role in the transition from the simple hexagonal structure into the fcc structure when iodine is lost from the specimen or “vice versa”. The orientation relationship between the intercalate and the C60 structure is [01 $$\overline {\text{1}}$$ 10]h∥[1 $$\overline {\text{1}}$$ 10]fcc and (001)h∥(110)fcc. A model is proposed to interpret the features observed in EDP and HREM consistently.

Notes: Abstract Absolute triple differential cross sections for the ionisation of He by electrons with energies near 300 eV have been measured in asymmetric conditions. The kinematics of the experiment select ionising events which belong to the intermediate regime of energy and momentum transfer. The experiments are compared with the distorted wave Born approximation.

Notes: Abstract Results of measurements for electron impact ionization of atomic helium are reported for energy-sharing kinematics in a coplanar asymmetric geometry. Incident energies of 100 eV and 200 eV are considered and comparison with previous experiments in fully symmetric kinematics allows the results to be put on an absolute scale. The cross-sections are compared with those obtained from two variants of the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) model. Good general agreement is obtained for the form of the angular distributions. The absolute magnitude of the cross sections is however not compatible with the choice of half-on-shell Coulomb T-Matrix currently used in the distorted wave impulse and related approximations.

Notes: Abstract Distorted-wave Born approximation calculations are reported for electron impact ionization of He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe in coplanar symmetric geometry at energies of 100, 500 and 1000 eV. Of special interest is double scattering effect at large angles.

Notes: Abstract The distorted-wave Born approximation (DW-BA) is discussed and samples of calculations are presented for ionization of the 2p inner shell of Ar, the 5p, 5s and 4d shells of Xe, and for ionization of He in asymmetric perpendicular plane geometry. Agreement with measurements of inner shell ionization of Ar is excellent. It is pointed out that triple differential cross sections for ionization of heavy atoms can exhibit much structure, which presents a challenge to both theory and experiment. Particular cases of 5s and 4d ionization of Xe are given as examples of situations worthy of experimental investigation. Comparison is made with very recent measurements of ionization of He in asymmetric perpendicular plane geometry. In agreement with experiment, DWBA shows at all incident energies a single main peak at φ=180°, where φ is the angle between the outgoing electrons. It is demonstrated that at high energies this peak arises from a double collison mechanism. This contrasts with energy-sharing ionization into the perpendicular plane where the double collision mechanism, dominant at high energies, gives a peak at φ=90°, and where with reducing energy this peak is replaced by one at φ=180° coming from the single collision mechanism. Suggestions are made for further experiments.
