Notes: Abstract Nonlinear I–V characteristics of YBa2Cu3O y epitaxial film at different temperatures in a magnetic field of up to 5T and angles between the direction of the field and the a–b plane of 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90° were measured. We find that there are the vortex glass phase and vortex liquid phase in the mixed state. The flux creep exists in the vortex glass phase, and it obviously appears in the area around the boundary between the vortex glass phase and the vortex liquid phase.

Notes: In recent years, the development of high performance Spectra® fibers has received increasing attention in industry. Because of the outstanding capability to absorb energy, these polyethylene fibers are frequently used in damage tolerant composite materials to protect equipment, apparatus, and/or people against blast and debris of explosion or projectiles. Since the fiber is thermally stable, it is possible to design composite structures that are suitable for use in applications where prolonged exposure to flame is anticipated. In this paper, we report the findings obtained in a recent flammability evaluation of a Spectra composite subjected to a torch flame, and to hot metal balls. The Spectra composite structures that will be discussed were found to withstand these exposures without burning and the smoke generation and toxic gas emission were far below the limits set in the standard for current aircraft interior materials.

Notes: An ElectroScan ESEM was used for in situ corrosion studies on cold drawn electropolished 316L stainless steel tube surfaces in the as-received and passivated conditions. Corrosion product was removed as it formed and the tube surface was viewed before, during, and after corrosive attack. The corrosion process was followed in situ, and the sample features most susceptible to corrosion (draw lines, inclusions, etc.) were identified. In addition, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to study the changes in surface chemistry after corrosive attack. This information provided clear evidence of relevant corrosion mechanisms and relative corrosion susceptibility. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
