Notes: Abstract The c-kit ligand is expressed on tissue-anchored stromal cells. It plays an important role in the development of c-kit-bearing cells, such as haematopoietic cells, germ cells, mast cells and melanocytes. In the present study, we used the reverse transcriptase-mediated polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique to investigate whether human keratinocytes are able to express c-kit ligand mRNA. Two sets of primers were designed to distinguish two types of c-kit ligand mRNA (full-length type and spliced type). One set was used to amplify an 882-bp DNA fragment from the full-length type, and a 798-bp DNA fragment from the spliced type. Another set was used to amplify a 375-bp DNA fragment from the full-length type only. A cDNA fragment corresponding to the full-length type mRNA was amplified from a cDNA preparation of cultured human keratinocytes as well as from epidermis obtained by the suction blister technique. This result indicates the spontaneous transcription of full-length type mRNA of the c-kit ligand in human keratinocytes.

Notes: Abstract      A novel siderophore, called acinetobactin, with both catecholate and hydroxamate functional groups was isolated from low-iron cultures of Acinetobacter baumannii ATCC 19606. The structure was elucidated by chemical degradation, fast-atom bombardment mass spectrometry and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Acinetobactin was composed of ω-N-hydroxyhistamine, threonine and 2,3-dihydr ybenzoic acid, the last two components forming an oxazoline ring. Acinetobactin was structurally related to anguibactin, a plasmid-encoded siderophore of Vibrio anguillarum. The only difference was that acinetobactin possessed an oxazoline ring instead of a thiazoline ring. Four of 12 other clinical A. baumannii strains examined produced acinetobactin, indicative of strain-to-strain variation in the ability to produce acinetobactin. In addition, a relatively small amount of acinetobactin w as also detected in A. haemolyticus ATCC 17906.

Notes: Abstract We study nonlinear traveling-wave (TW) and stationary states of convection in experiments in ethanol-water mixtures. While the TW phase velocity as a function of Rayleigh number has been recently shown to be in agreement with the predictions of theory and numerical calculations, we find that this velocity is temporally modulated at frequencies corresponding to the travel time of a single convection roll and of a roll pair past a point stationary in the convection cell. This modulation could be due to the pinning of the convection pattern by experimental inhomogeneities. For large Rayleigh numbers where stationary overturning convection is expected, we sometimes observe extremely slow unidirectional TW states. For larger Rayleigh numbers, this slow TW state starts and stops intermittently on a characteristic time scale of several days. The possible origin of these phenomena and their potential utility are discussed.
