    Notes: A need exists for the development of totally biodegradable packaging materials. Chitosan is an under-utilized polymer which possesses many of the desired characteristics for this application. This article describes the crosslinking of chitosan fibers. Epichlorohydrin (ECH) was selected as a convenient base catalyzed crosslinking agent. The strength of chitosan fibers, especially wet tenacity, is improved by crosslinking. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The optimal production of the fructan biopolymer levan by the bacterium Erwinia herbicola was investigated, including variations in nitrogen, carbon and phosphorous sources, pH, incubation time, culture yields up to 19% by weight produced based on conversion of sucrose as the carbon source when grown in a continuous culture system and processed by tangential flow filtration. Product identity was confirmed with gas chromatography (GC) and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and low-angle laser light scattering (LALLS) determination of the molecular weight of the product showed a significant difference in molecular weight values dependent on the method of analysis. Analysis by GPC resulted in molecular weight one order of magnitude lower than LALLS independent of sample, underscoring the unusual nature of this biopolymer.

Diese Kenntnis wird in ein van der Waals-Kristallnetzwerkmodell übernommen, welches die plastische Scherdeformation der Kristalle einschließt. Die Wiedergabe der Spannungs-Dehnungs-Kurven bei verschiedenen Temperaturen und der temperaturinduzierten Rückstellung führt zu einer Identifikation von Deformationsmechanismen in teilweise kristallisierten Polymeren.
    Notes: Crystallinity, mean crystal thickness, thickness distribution of crystal, and mean thickness of the amorphous layers in LDPE are deduced by treating it as a eutectoid copolymer. This knowledge is transferred into a van der Waals network theory which includes plastic shear deformation of crystals. The fit of stress-strain pattern at different temperatures and of temperature induced relaxation and shrinkage informs about the deformation mechanism in semicrystalline polymers.

    Notes: The quantification of oxygen and carbon in high-temperature (Tc) superconducting oxide thin films was made by employing elastic resonance in He backscattering analysis. A method combining the oxygen resonance technique and channeling was presented for measuring the nature of the oxygen disorder near the surface and the interface in a YBCO superconducting film grown on an MgO substrate. The oxygen resonance technique was used to quantify the oxygen profiling in the metal/YBCO contacts, showing that Zr and Nb act as sinks to oxygen from YBCO films and are oxidized in the forms Zr/ZrO2/YBCO/MgO and Nb0.2/YBCO/MgO after annealing in a vacuum at 350°C. We combined the carbon and oxygen resonances to determine the carbon contamination and oxygen concentration changes on the YBCO surface after coating and baking the photoresist. Residual carbon on the surface and a thin layer of oxygen depletion near the YBCO surface have been observed. The residual carbon in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 films made by the decomposition of metallo-organic precursors was quantified using carbon resonance.
