Notes: Abstract A total of 215 ureteroceles were present in 41 children with single-system and 154 children with double-system ureteroceles. Males were predominant in the single-system group while the reverse was true in patients with double-system ureteroceles. Single-system ureteroceles occurred more commonly on the left side. In double-system ureteroceles there was minimal renal function in 74% of the ureterocele-bearing moieties, 26% of the ipsilateral lower moieties, and 3% of the contralateral kidneys. Vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) was present in 17% of the ureterocele-bearing ureters, 54% of the ipsilateral second ureters, and 28% of the contralateral ureters. In the single-system ureteroceles, 20% of the ipsilateral kidneys had minimal renal function and 9% of both the ipsilateral and contralateral ureters had VUR. Differences in laterality, VUR, and function of the subservient renal tissue suggest that single-system ureteroceles are a different disease entity from the double-system type and should be considered separately in any discussion of the management of ureteroceles.

Notes: Summary Hypocotyl calli-derived protoplasts of two cultivars of Brassica juncea (2n=36), a major oil-seed crop, were fused with normal as well as γ-irradiated mesophyll protoplasts of Eruca sativa (2n=22). The irradiation of the Eruca fusion partner increased the plating efficiency as well as the morphogenic potentiality of the fusion products over the normal fusion. Fertile plants could be regenerated from such fusion products. Analysis of 63 out of 181 plants regenerated showed that, indeed, 11 somatic hybrids (2n=58) and 10 partial somatic hybrids (chromosome number ranged between 50 and 56) had been obtained. Pollen viability (0%–82.9%) and seed set (0%–50%) of the hybrids indicated them to be useful for future studies.

Notes: Despite the prevalence of starch-hydrolyzing enzymes in bacilli, relatively few have been studied in detail. In an attempt to isolate an effective α-amylase-producing strain, Bacillus globisporus BH-1b has been isolated. The strain requires few nutritional supplements and shows induction in the presence of galactose. 2% potassium nitrate and pH 7.2 emerged as optimum for the fermentation medium. The durability of the enzyme has also been tested at a low pH and a high temperature.

Notes: Microorganisms are the dominatign inhabitants of the soil, and there is an icnreasing tendency to apply heavy metals in agricultural practice. The ecological balance may be distrubed unknowingly if we do nogt measure the tolerance by the microorganisms of these heavy metals. It has been found in a Oscillatoria model system that widely used heavy metals have a high degree of toxicity to this cyanobacter.
