Abstract A simple method to compute the drag coefficient of two-dimensional bodies with arbitrary shapes is presented. The procedure is based on cellular automata as an extreme idealization of the molecular dynamics of a viscous fluid. We verify the algorithm by examples and obtain results in quantitative agreement with experiments even when eddies behind the obstacle are formed.
