Notes: Summary Segregating allozyme and DNA polymorphisms were used to construct a preliminary linkage map for faba bean. Two F2 populations were analyzed, the most informative of which was segregating for 66 markers. Eleven independently assorting linkage groups were identified in this population. One of the groups contained the 45s ribosomal array and could be assigned to the large metacentric chromosome I on which the nucleolar organizer region is located. This linkage group also contained two isozyme loci, Est and Tpi-p, suggesting that it may share some homology with chromosome 4 of garden pea on which three similar markers are syntenic. Additional aspects of the map and the extent of coverage of the total nuclear genome are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The pattern of L-alanine uptake in isolated cells of interscapular brown adipose tissue has been determined. The uptake can be divided into the diffusion component (Kd=0.55 min−1) and a saturable Na+-dependent transport (K M =0.87 mM andV max=155 nmol/min/106 cells). The saturable component can be subdivided into MeAIB-sensitive (K M =1.63 mM andV max=162 nmol/min/106 cells) and MeAIB-insensitive (K M =3.2 mM andV max=39.5 nmol/min/106 cells). This kinetic pattern could indicate the presence of transport system (s) that resemble the commonly described transport systems for alanine uptake in several tissues.

Notes: Abstract A density gradient method is used to isolate membrane vesicles from brown adipose tissue. These respond to changes in osmolarity and show the classical overshoot pattern when L-alanine uptake is assayed. Transport is shown to be effected by two components: a linear (Kd=0.498 min−1) and Na+-dependent saturable component (Km=2.3 mM) and a Vmax=19.9 pmol/μg protein·min). This pattern is similar to that shown by cells isolated from brown adipose tissue.

Notes: Summary Five subtelocentric primary trisomics of Vicia faba L. were isolated from crosses between asynaptic mutants and normal plants or translocation tester stocks. The extra chromosome of each trisomic was identified cytologically by critical multivalent association at metaphase I of meiosis.
