Notizen: Slit devolatilization of polymers has been considered in a recent work by Maffettone et al. (1991), who have presented a successful model for single slit devolatilization. In this article, the stability of operation of a realistic multislit process is considered. It is shown that the flow rate per slit which can be stably operated may be significantly less than the optimal one for single slit operation. Stability improves as the concentration of volatiles in the feed solution decreases. The non-Newtonian character of the feed solution at high shear rates is discussed in qualitative terms.

Notizen: Basal melting of Antarctic ice shelves is an important element in the overall balance of Antarctic ice. A heat-transfer model for the basal melting of the Drygalski Ice Tongue is presented. The model does not contain any adjustable parameter. The calculated basal melting rate agrees very well with the value estimated from an overall ice balance on the ice Tongue. It is concluded that relatively simple concepts of transport phenomena may be used to model some important features of the dynamics of the Antarctic ice sheet.

Notizen: We analyze the mathematical structure of a multicomponent reactive mixture in a plug flow reactor with axial diffusion. Quasilinearity of the kinetic equation assuming “uniformity” does not carry over to the second-order equations when diffusion is considered and a perturbation expansion method needs to be developed. Perturbation around the limit of a CSTR is regular, which leads to nonhomogeneous second-order differential equations containing no unknown kinetic term, so that the procedure cascades down to the solution of the CSTR problem. Perturbation around the PFR problem is singular, but the inner (boundary layer) solution is easy. The outer solution leads to a series of integro-differential equations, which can be reduced to complete Volterra integral equations of the second kind; these are known to admit unique solutions. A formal approach to finding these solutions is discussed.

Notizen: A model of the process of polymer devolatilization in a heated slit is presented. Momentum, heat, and mass transfer in the slit are taken into consideration, and only one adjustable parameter is used. The model predicts pressure and temperature profiles, and residual volatile contents at the exit which are in good agreement with those measured in a single instrumented slit.

Notizen: Processes, in which a multicomponent mixture of chemically similar compounds undergoes cracking reactions governed by nonlinear kinetics, are analyzed. Cracking reactions in general imply cleavage of chemical bonds between monomeric units. The article focuses on the case of the “uniform” kinetics. To obtain an analytical solution of the kinetic equations describing this process, we present an approach based on a continuous description of the mixture. The resulting nonlinear integrodifferential equation has been linearized by a warped time scale, and a formal solution has been obtained via a regular perturbation method. The perturbation parameter is twice the inverse of the initial average number of monomeric units in excess of the minimum number that can be cracked by the reactions considered.

Notizen: Nonlinear kinetics in multicomponent mixtures are best described in terms of continuous distribution functions. The quasilinearization procedure that we introduced in 1988 for “uniform” kinetics does not carry over to problems where second-order derivatives appear, as in all cases where diffusion phenomena are of importance. We analyze a simple diffusion-reaction problem in a porous catalyst, by making use of a perturbation technique. The general conclusions reached from this specific problem can be generalized to a wider class of diffusion-reaction problems in complex mixtures.
