    Notizen: The paper presents a technique for identifying and removing unwanted terms in the field power expansion of multipolar magnets. The technique is based on the measurement of the radial field at the poles of the magnet. The field terms are derived by analytical formulas and used to evaluate the current corrections. This trimming procedure has been tested for a 16-pole magnet designed for electron paramagnetic resonance imaging and permits a continuous control of the field configuration.

    Notizen: We studied whole blood platelet aggregation induced by collagen, platelet activating factor (PAF) and measured basal platelet L-arginine (L-arg) levels, as an indirect index of the nitric oxide (NO) pathway in migraine. Migraine, both with and without aura groups, showed a reduced aggregation to collagen, but not to PAF, compared with control subjects. Platelet L-arg levels were significantly increased in migraine with aura sufferers, whereas the plasma levels were in the same range in migraineurs and controls. Platelet hyperesponsiveness to collagen stimulation in migraine may be linked to an increased availability of the amino acid precursor and an abnormal NO synthesis.

    Notizen: The paper describes an electron paramagnetic resonance apparatus for spectroscopy and imaging at very low frequency (283 MHz). The bridge operates in a reflection cavity homodyne configuration and can be used on a very broad frequency range. The sample cavity is a one loop-two gap resonator and accepts samples up to 5 cm in diameter and 10 cm long. These sample dimensions make the apparatus suitable for observing living samples such as rats. For the main field and gradients the apparatus uses a newly designed multipolar magnet that can provide the main field and gradients for 2D image reconstruction. The third gradient is obtained by coils mounted in the bore of the magnet. Tests on peroxilamine disulfonate samples have shown micromolar sensitivity. The minimum spatial resolution is limited by the sample linewidth and by the signal/noise. In living samples the toxicity of nitroxide radicals restricts the maximum label concentrations to values of the order of 10−4 M, and the resolution seems to be limited by sensitivity to fractions of cm3.
