Notes: Seeds of three legumes, Adenocarpus decorticans. Astragalus granatensis ssp. granatensis and Cytisus reverchonii, endemic to the Betic Cordillera, were collected from different altitudes. Under laboratory conditions, various factors and endogenous characteristics which may affect their germination potential in the field were studied. The seeds of all three species required chemical scarification in order to germinate, and the maximum germination temperature of all three proved to be correspondingly higher the higher the altitude of their ecological niche. However, each species showed differences in germinability and optimum temperature according to altitude. Variations in free and bound abscisic acid (ABA) and proline, according to altitude, did not follow the same pattern in each species; they increased in Cytisus, fell in Adenocarpus, and remain unchanged in Astragalus. The highest germination rates were obtained when free-ABA levels were lowest in all species. The polyamines, spermidine, spermine, putrescine and cadaverine, were present in all species, spermi-dine being the most abundant. Putrescine was the only polyamine whose level varied with altitude, decreasing in Adenocarpus and Cytisus, and increasing in Astragalus.

Notes: Mature-green and early breaker tomato fruit (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) cv‘Dario F-150’treated with 0.5g liter-1 iprodione were stored at 6, 9 and 12°C for 28 days. Intermittent warmings for 1 day at 20°C were applied every week on all fruits. They were subjected to post-storage ripening for 4 days at 20°C. On tomatoes from both maturity stages, intermittent warming during four cycles of 6 days at 9°C and 1 day at 20°C prevented development of chilling injury and decay, enhanced surface color and loss of firmness (compared with continuous 9°C storage), (delayed shriveling, and resulted in the lowest total losses at the end of storage and at the end of post-storage ripening.

Notes: Abstract Plant secondary compounds can prevent feeding by phytophagous insects or, if ingested, can be poisonous to them. Less attention has been paid to the additional effects they have on feeding behavior when they are only weakly deterrent or not deterrent at all. Experiments were carried out on the generalist grass-hopperSchistocerca americana. Individuals were presented either with two cakes of high-quality artificial food with a single deterrent compound added or with two cakes, each with a different added deterrent compound. The deterrents consisted of single plant secondary compounds that were either marginally or strongly deterrent. There were profound differences in feeding behavior between those individuals given identical and those given different cake types, including longer feeding bouts on single cakes when a choice of different cake types was available. The behavioral effects demonstrate that the presence of secondary compounds in one food can influence the patterns of feeding on other available foods and suggest that such chemicals could impact foraging activities in a complex manner.

Notes: Abstract Carbohydrate metabolism was prospectively evaluated in twenty-one normal women prior to and during their use for three months of a monophasic oral contraceptive containing the progestin gestodene plus ethinyl estradiol. The women had a three-hour oral glucose tolerance test using a 75 gram glucose load, measuring serum glucose and insulin levels. The results demonstrate no significant changes in either of the carbohydrate metabolic indices between the two tests. These data support the safety of this new progestin-containing contraceptive.
