Abstract The effect of the methyl substituent in position 7 on the electrochemical polymerization of 7-methylthionaphthene-indole (7-methyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b]indole; MTNI) was investigated. Acid-base equilibria involving the heterocyclic nitrogen were observed. The electrolytic synthesis of oxidized poly-MTNI is a process controlled by a protonation-deprotonation mechanism. The electrical conductivity of this material was measured.
