Notes: Abstract Based on an ab initio cohesive energy calculation and a model of three-body interaction, the pair potential can be calculated using the Möbius inversion theorem in the theory of numbers. Then the atomic force constants and the phonon dispersion for A1 are evaluated both with and without three-body interaction. Compared with experiments, the results show that taking the three-body interaction into account considerably improves the dispersions. Contrary to previous work, the method for calculating the atomic force constants and phonon dispersions presented here is simple, with only two adjustable parameters.

Notes: The retention behaviour of conjugated bile acids has been studied in a reversed phase high performance liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) system by using the mixture of methanol and aqueous phosphate buffer as the mobile phase. The retentions of the conjugates in RP-HPLC have been found to be mainly controlled by the glycine and taurine groups. The selectivity between five different glycine and taurine conjugated bile acids is a constant in RP-HPLC. This selectivity has been used for peak identification in the practical separation of conjugated bile acids.

Notes: A reversed phase high performance liquid chromatographic method for the high sensitivity determination of individual bile acids in serum using a C18 column with a ternary solvent system combined with fluorometric techniques using immobilized enzymes is described. A computer-assisted diagnosis system using pattern recognition was developed to assist the clinical diagnosis of various liver and biliary diseases. A total consistency rate of 95% can be reached using this system.

Notes: Abstract The current pre-operative assessment of the degree of malignancy in brain glioma is based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings and clinical data. 280 cases were studied, of which 111 were high-grade malignancies and 169 were low-grade, so that regular and interpretable patterns of the relationships between glioma MRI features and the degree of malignancy could be acquired. However, as uncertainties in the data and missing values existed, a fuzzy rule extraction algorithm based on a fuzzy min-max neural network (FMMNN) was used. The performance of a multi-layer perceptron network (MLP) trained with the error back-propagation algorithm (BP), the decision tree algorithm ID3, nearest neighbour and the original fuzzy min-max neural network were also evaluated. The results showed that two fuzzy decision rules on only six features achieved an accuracy of 84.6% (89.9% for low-grade and 76.6% for high-grade cases). Investigations with the proposed algorithm revealed that age, mass effect, oedema, post-contrast enhancement, blood supply, calcification, haemorrhage and the signal intensity of the T1-weighted image were important diagnostic factors.

Notes: Summary A series of small peptides containing varying degree of charge and size was used to study the effects of physicochemical properties on migration in free-solution capillary electrophoresis (FSCE). A semiempirical relationship between migration time under acidic conditions and the square root of molecular weight divided by the quantity of the number of the positively ionizable groups has been established. The ionization of the carboxyl terminal group in the polypeptides is negligible under acidic conditions. The relationship developed from this work has been used for the prediction of migration parameters in free solution capillary electrophoresis.

Notes: Small hydrophilic peptides differing in only one glycine amino acid group have been successfully separated by free-solution capillary electrophoresis (FSCE) using phosphate buffer at acid pH. The effects of column temperature and operating current on the migration times of these small peptides have been investigated. The results from FSCE have been compared with those from reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography.
