Notes: The development of community care policy and the inadequacies of professional responses to the needs of informal carers were described in an earlier paper A qualitative analysis of carers’ replies to a questionnaire survey demonstrated that the most potent Stressors, contrary to what has previously been assumed, were linked more to subjective perceptions of events or circumstances than to the objective features of the events and circumstances themselves This paper presents a quantitative analysis of data from the same survey which confirm the impressions gained from the analysis of the qualitative data These findings prompt a reconceptualization of carer burden within a transactional model of stress, which is then considered as a basis for understanding how carers adapt to stress in their lives Practice implications are assessed

Notes: Abstract A search for multifractal structures, in analogy with multifractal theories, is performed on UA1 minimum bias events. A downward concave multifractal spectral function,f(α) (where α is the Lipschitz-Hölder exponent), indicates that there are self-similar cascading processes, governing the evolution from the quark to the hadron level, in the final states of hadronic interactions.f(α) is an accurate measure of the bin to bin fluctuations of any observable. It is shown that the most sensitive comparison between data and the Monte Carlo models, GENCL and PYTHIA 4.8 can be made usingf(α). It is found that these models do not fully reproduce the behaviour of the data.

Notes: Abstract We report on measurements of correlated $$b\bar b$$ production in $$p\bar p$$ collisions at $$\sqrt s = 630GeV$$ , using dimuon data to tag both theb and $$\bar b$$ quarks. Starting from an inclusive dimuon sample we obtain improved cross-sections for single inclusive beauty production and confirm our earlier results on $$B^0 - \bar B^0$$ mixing. From a study of $$b\bar b$$ correlations we derive explicit cross-sections for semi-differential $$b\bar b$$ production. We compare the measured cross-sections and correlations to $$\mathcal{O}\left( {\alpha _s^3 } \right)$$ QCD predictions and find good quantitative agreement. From the measured angular distributions we establish a size-able contribution from higher order QCD processes with a significance of about seven standard deviations. A large nonperturbative contribution to these higher order corrections is excluded.

Notes: Summary In recent years Rutter's Malaise Inventory has been used increasingly to measure levels of stress among those who care for people with dependency needs. Although though there has been an element of dispute in the literature about the unidimensional nature of the scale, later work (Bebbington and Quine 1987) tends to suggest that Malaise Inventory scores can be used as a single internally consistent measure of stress. In this study consideration is given to the results of a national sample survey of 527 members of the Association of Carers (now Carers: National Association) which suggests the existence of two valid dimensions to the Malaise Inventory across a wider range of carer groups. Implications for future development and administration of the scale as a measure of stress are discussed.

Notes: Summary The copy number, genomic arrangement and linkage relationships of two classes of lipoxygenase gene have been investigated in Pisum(pea) lines. Each of the two classes contained two to three members in P. sativum lines. RFLPs associated with genomic fragments containing the 5′ sequences of one gene class permitted its correlation in genetical analyses with a lipoxygenase locus on linkage group 4, which was previously identified through polypeptide variation. Genetical analyses of RFLPs associated with other fragments identified by low- and medium-stringency hybridization to lipoxygenase cDNAs indicate the existence of other unlinked lipoxygenase gene loci.

Notes: Abstract A trypsin inhibitor locus (Tri) has been mapped close to Vc-2 on Pisum (pea) linkage group 5 using recombinant inbred lines derived from crosses of genotypes showing qualitative variation in seed trypsin inhibitors. F2 seed populations derived from crosses between lines showing qualitative variation in trypsin inhibitors as well as quantitative variation in inhibitor activity showed an association between the segregation of the structural variation and relative activity levels. Clones complementary to Pisum trypsin inhibitor mRNA were used in hybridization analyses which showed that the segregation of protein polymorphisms reflected directly the segregation of polymorphisms associated with the structural genes.
