Notes: Abstract By means of microsurgical lymph cannulation human skin lymph derived from the late phase of an elicitation reaction to diphenylcyclopropenone was sampled. Cells were isolated by centrifugation and then treated with mouse anti-CDl a mnonoclonal antibodies and sheep antimouse antibody-coated Dynabeads. Ultrastructural and immunocytochemical analyses revlaled anti-CDl a/Dynabead-rosetted CDl a- and protein S-100-positive cells which did not express monocyte surface markers, but surface antigens such as HLA-DR, ICAM-I and, in part, LFA-3. In comparison to freshly prepared human epidermal Langerhns cells (LC), a large fraction of these cells contained no or markedly fewer Birbeck granules and exhibited extensive ruffling of the surface. These data suggest that the phenotype of LC in skin lymph derived from the elicitation phase of allergic contact dermatitis is similar to LC cultured in vitro. In the functional concept or LC or our time, these cells correspond to the dendritic cells designated as “veiled”.

Notes: We report a 6-year-old boy suffering from acquired epidermolysis bullosa, who presented with extensive lesions of the mucous membranes and disseminated, herpetiform and‘cluster of jewels' like vesicles and bullae arising on erythematous plaques. Direct immunofluorescence showed linear deposits of IgG and C3 at the epidermal basement membrane zone. Indirect immunofluorescence demonstrated circulating autoantibodies(titre 1:128–1:256) directed at the blister floor of human NaCl-split skin, and reacting specifically with collagen VII of the anchoring fibrils, as demonstrated by immunoblotting. The disease was controlled with a combination of dapsone and prednisone. This case demonstrates the importance of modern immunological techniques in classifying childhood autoimmune bullous diseases, as precise diagnosis is important in determining an appropriate therapeutic regimen.

Notes: Summary The clinicopathological features of two carcinosarcomas of the urinary bladder are reported. The tumours occurred in a 64- and a 66-year-old patient presenting with haematuria and both were polypoid. The epithelial component was consistent with small cell undifferentiated carcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation, whereas the sarcomatous component did not display specific features. The carcinomatous component showed immunohistochemical reactivity for different epithelial markers as well as for chromogranin and neuron specific enolase. Conversely, the sarcomatous cells stained strongly for vimentin and in one case for muscle actin and smooth muscle actin. The differential diagnosis of biphasic tumours of the bladder is discussed and the literature reviewed.

Notes: Summary The development of Meningeosis lymphomatosa is a rare event even in high grade Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, often without any typical clinical signs. We report a case, where a unilateral sudden loss of vision was the first symptom of meningeosis lymphomatosa and indicated a generalized relapse in the patient, who seemed so far to be in complete remission.

Notes: Summary Nucleotide sequences of bovine papillomavirus (BPV) DNA amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from samples of equine sarcoid skin tumours were determined. All naturally occurring sarcoids (n=58 tumours from 32 horses and 2 donkeys) contained BPV-DNA. All but 3 of the genome fragments belonged to the BPV type 1 strain (BPV-1); the remaining were BPV type 2. Similar results were obtained with cutaneous bovine papillomas used as controls (n=20). One of the horses, carrying 2 sarcoids, was particularly interesting; one tumour contained BPV-1 DNA whilst the other sarcoid yielded BPV-2 DNA, suggesting that horses are not immune to super-infection. BPV-DNA was even amplified from the sarcoid samples which had yielded negative results in previous investigations when DNA isolated from the lesions was used in Southern blot hybridization with BPV probes. In addition, there was no detectable BPV-DNA in any equine or bovine tissue examined other than sarcoids or cutaneous bovine papillomas. Biopsies of normal skin surrounding lesions yielded exclusively negative results. The described nucleotide differences represent a natural genomic variation of this BPV type between geographically distant locations. The identical variations recovered from cattle and horses in Switzerland, a finding of great epidemiological interest, strongly suggest that a uniform variant of BPV-1 is one of the etiologic agents of equine sarcoid and bovine papilloma in a given region.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the influence of static magnetic fields can be demonstrated in an osteoblast cell culture. For this in-vitro study we used osteoblasts originating from the embryonal calyariae of rats. The total material (n=41) was divided in four group: a) cell cultures submitted to the fields of attracting magnets (n=11), b) cell cultures in the fields of repelling magnets (n=10), c) cell cultures under the influence of demagnetized magnets (sham group, n=11), d) control cultures (n=9). The cell cultures were subjected for 21 days to magnetie fields (intensity 178 ml) using Neodynium magnets. Osteoblast activity was histo chemically determined by staining the alkaline phosphatase produced. The quantitative evaluation was performed by measuring the optical density of the cell cultures and the results were statistically analysed. The results of these in-vitro study are 1. The optical density of the cell cultires was nearly the same in samples with or without the influence of magnetic fields. 2. No divergent reaction could be found between the application of homogeneous and heterogeneous magnetie fields. 3. The different orientation of homogeneous magnetic fields in vertical or horizontal direction did not effect the osteobfast cell culture. 4. The cellular distribution in the osteoblast cultures does not follow the orientation of the magnetic field lines. 5. The form of the osteoblasts was nearly the same among all four groups. According to our results a potential influence of static magnetic fields with an intensity of 178 mT on osteoblast activity could not be determined in the cell culture by evaluating the alkaline phosphatase production.

Notes: Summary The authors describe a 24-year-old woman presenting with swelling and pain of several finger joints. Roentgenograms showed periarticular, calcific deposits at all locations of swelling. One such deposit revealed the presence of hydroxyapatite crystals on X-ray diffraction. After two injections of corticosteroids in and around one deposit its size and density diminished rapidly, whereas the uninjected corresponding site of the other hand showed no initial improvement; after two years no difference was discernible. Under systemic and topic NSAIDs, pain and swelling improved similarly in all joints. In conclusion, periarthritis of the fingers associated with radiopaque deposits responded favourably to NSAID therapy, while local corticosteroid injections showed no additional benefit.

Notes: Dithio and Thiono Esters, 56.  -  Reaction of Thio Esters and Thio Amides with Azodicarboxylic Acid DerivativesDithio and thiono esters 1 react with azodicarboxylates 3 to form the addition products 4 or the oxidation products 5 in varying ratios. With malonates, malonamides and dithionomalonates only the addition products 7 were obtained. N,N,N′,N′-Tetramethyldithiomalonamide yields with azodicarboxylic acid derivatives 3 either the normal addition product 8, the β-elimination product 9 or N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyltrithiomesoxalamide (10A), the first stable vicinal trithiocarbonyl compound.
