    Notes: Mn- and Co-doped acicular γ-Fe2O3 particles with a coercivity of 923 Oe and Co content of 3.5 wt % have been prepared by a special process. This involves high-temperature ion diffusion, then step annealing. These particles exhibit a high magnetic thermal stability and low-temperature coefficient of coercivity. The latter demonstrates a striking contrast to the ordinary cobalt-body-doped γ-Fe2O3 particles. The induced uniaxial anisotropy constant Ku and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant K1 of the particles were determined by torque measurements. The novel properties of these particles are mainly due to the high uniaxial anisotropy, resulting from the anisotropic arrangements of cobalt ions. With the above characteristics and low Co content, these acicular particles can be one of the promising candidates for particulate high-density magnetic recording materials.

    Notes: Fine equiaxed γ-CoxFe2−xO3 (x=0, 0.06) particles with a diameter ranging from 200 to 1000 A(ring) were prepared by chemical precipitation. The average crystallite sizes were determined from x-ray line broadening measurements. The saturation magnetization and magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the particles were determined by using the approach to saturation. An empirical linear dependence of the specific saturation magnetization σs on the specific surface area Sa of the fine crystallites was obtained in the form of σs(S)=σs(∞)(1−ASa). The slope A which reflects the surface spin canting anomaly is different for γ-Fe2O3 and γ-Co0.06Fe1.94O3 particles. Under the supposition of the fine crystallite consisting of two parts, i.e., the surface layer, whose magnetic moment cannot be turned entirely along the direction of the applied field, but makes an average canting angle with the field, and the inner part, whose magnetic moment can be aligned along the direction of the applied field, the above formula can be interpreted well. The different slope A for γ-Fe2O3 and γ-Co0.06Fe1.94O3 particles may be caused by the different anisotropies of the two series particles.

    Notes: The causes of the coercivity enhancement and the coercivity instability of acicular cobalt ferrite particles containing 0–9.2 wt % Fe2+ ions under the influence of magnetic field and temperature were investigated by means of transverse magnetic field annealing, torque, and Mössbauer experiments. The coercivity enhancement and the instability of Co modified iron oxide particles are closely related to the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. A Fe2+-CO2+ pair model was proposed to explain the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of Co modified iron particles. To verify the nature of the Fe2+-Co2+ pair, the probability of one or more Co ions appearing in the neighborhood of a B site Fe2+ ion was calculated using the chemical composition, the Mössbauer parameters, Pi(Fe+2) and Pi(Fe+3) and discussed conditions for forming the pair between the nearest-neighbor Co2+ and Fe2+ ion.

    Notes: It is known that the symmetry of two-mode squeezed states is governed by the group Sp(4) which is locally isomorphic to the O(3,2) de Sitter group. It is shown that this complicated ten-parameter group can be regarded as a product of two three-parameter Sp(2) groups. It is shown also that two coupled harmonic oscillators serve as a physical basis for the symmetry decomposition. It is shown further that the concept of entropy is needed when one of the two modes is not observed. The entropy is zero when the system is uncoupled. The system reaches thermal equilibrium when the entropy becomes maximal.

    Notes: Spectrophotometric determinations of myoglobin (Mb) and hemoglobin (Hb) in bovine longissimus and psoas and chicken thigh and drumstick muscles were compared using size exclusion (SE) and hydrophobic interaction (HI) high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Detection limit (61 ng) and standard deviation for total pigments were lower with SE than with HI. Bovine and chicken Mb and Hb coeluted with SE-HPLC. Mb and Hb from bovine muscles were separated using HI-HPLC, but pigment concentrations in chicken muscles were below detection limits of the HI-HPLC method. The amounts of Mb and Hb in longissimus and psoas muscles differed with individual cattle.

    Notes: Ascorbic acid was solubilized in oils via reversed micelles using phosphatidyl choline as surfactant and water. The effect of the solubilized ascorbic acid on the oxidative stability of fish and soybean oils was investigated in terms of peroxide value in the absence and presence of rosemary extract or δ-tocopherol. The autoxidation of the oils was greatly retarded with the ascorbic acid compared to the natural antioxidants used. The ascorbic acid also exerted a synergistic effect with δ-tocopherol in fish oil.

    Notes: Distribution of iron in six fractions (water-soluble, water-insoluble, diffusate, hematin, total heme, and ferritin) of beef and chicken muscles hcatcd to 55, 70, 85, and 100°C was determined. Iron content decreased in water-soluble fractions and increased in water-insoluble fractions as temperature increased from 27°C to 100°C. Heme iron decreased more from 55°C to 85°C than from 27°C to 55°C or 85°C to 100°C. The increase in diffusate iron appeared to be less than the decrease in heme iron at each heating temperature. As temperature increased from 27°C to 100°C, hematin iron content increased and extractable ferritin iron content decreased. These findings may help explain rapid development of oxidative rancidity in cooked meat.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Sur 26 chiens adultes, on a réalisé une perte de substance cortico-spongieuse dans le condyle externe de chaque fémur (soit 52 fémurs), et la cavité ainsi créée a été traitée par cryochirurgie, cautérisation au phénol ou obturation par du ciment osseux. Les animaux ont été sacrífiés après 1, 4, 12 semaines (et 24 semaines pour le groupe traité par cryochirurgie) afin de comparer l'étendue de la nécrose lìée à chaque traitement, et d'observer le processus de cicatrisation. Après cryochirurgie, la nécrose était profonde et intéressait une épaisseur de 2.5 à 14 mm autour de la cavité osseuse, représentant en moyenne 365% du volume de la cavité initiale. L'action du phénol était négligeable, car seuls quelques foyers nécrotiques microscopiques ont été observés sur les parois de la cavité. L'obturation par du ciment osseux entraînait une zone de nécrose d'une épaisseur régulière de 1.3 à 2.8 mm autour de la cavité, représentant en moyenne 153% de la cavité d'origine. La régénération des tissus dans la zone nécrosée après cryochirurgie était minime jusqu'à 4 semaines. Cependant après 12 semaines des zones de régénération étaient nettement identifiables en quantité importante, et la cicatrisation était presque complète à la 24é semaine. Le régénération de l'os nécrosé après obturation par du ciment osseux était rapidement identique aux spécimens de contrôle. Ces observations permettent de penser que la cryochirurgie pourrait jouer un rôle significatif comme complément du curetage, dans les tumeurs osseuses localisées, bénignes ou malignes. Par contre la cautérisation par le phénol ne semble pas un traitement adéquat. Enfin, bien que l'étendue de la nécrose soit relativement limitée, l'obturation par le ciment osseux peut être considérée comme utilisable dans les cas bénins.
    Notes: Summary A corticocancellous core was removed from the lateral condyle of both femurs in 26 skeletally mature dogs. The cavity was treated with cryosurgery, phenol cautery or packing with bone cement. The animals were killed after 1, 4, and 12 weeks in the phenol and cement groups, and also after 24 weeks in the cryosurgery group. The extent of the bone necrosis and healing was assessed in each group. After cryosurgery the extent of necrosis was profound in that the area of damage was 365% compared to the area of the cavity; the depth of necrosis extended between 2.5 and 14 mm, beyond the cavity wall. The effect of phenol was negligible in that only microscopic areas of superficial focal necrosis were found around the cavity wall. Bone cement produced an area of necrosis of 153% compared with the cavity, with a depth of between 1.3 and 2.8 mm. Regeneration in the region of necrosis after cryosurgery was only scanty by 4 weeks, but by 12 weeks considerable areas of regeneration were identified and complete healing was observed by 24 weeks. Regeneration of the necrotized bone produced by bone cement packing was rapid and similar to that of the control specimens. These findings suggest that cryosurgery could play a significant role as a surgical adjunct to curettage in locally aggressive benign bone tumours and in some malignancies. Phenol cautery is not regarded as an adequate treatment after curettage of bone tumours. Although the extent of necrosis was relatively small, packing with bone cement is thought to be a useful choice in benign cases.

    Notes: Summary Subependymoma is a rare, benign intraventricular tumour and a case of septum pellucidum origin examined with CT and MR is reported. Well demarcated non-enhancing mass with multiple small intratumoral cysts is demonstrated on CT and MR images. The differential diagnosis from ependymoma has some therapeutic implications but may not be possible by CT or MRI.
