Notes: Abstract The incorporation of deuterium into crystalline silicon, germanium, and gallium arsenide from a plasma source is investigated as a function of sample temperature during the plasma treatment. The total amount of incorporated deuterium and its bonding states are characterized by the thermal effusion (TE) technique for different dopants and doping levels. In all samples investigated, we find a strong influence of the passivation temperature on these quantities; however, there are large differences between different semiconductors and for different doping levels or dopants. The results are discussed in terms of plasma-induced defects, dopant-deuterium complexes, and surface effects.

Notes: Abstract The nutritive value of the marine microalgaeTetraselmis suecica, Isochrysis galbana, Dunaliella tertiolecta andChlorella stigmatophora was studied in diets given to rats. Biological assays were carried out in order to determine the Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER) and the Food Conversion Efficiency (FCE). Each dried microalga was fed to weaning Wistar albino rats as the sole protein source at a protein level of 12%. Control rats were given diets containing 12 % casein. Food consumption was similar in all groups. PER values obtained were 1.14 withT. suecica diet, 1.13 withI. galbana diet, 2.07 withD. tertiolecta diet and 1.13 withC. stigmatophora diet (casein, 2.50). FCE values followed a similar pattern. The data showed that the marine microalgaD. tertiolecta is a source of protein of good quality. Its PER is quite high, compared to vegetable and cereal proteins, and compares favourably with other microbial protein sources, such as yeasts or different freshwater microalgae. Haematological tests showed no significant differences among the groups in haemoglobin levels, red and white blood cell counts, differential count and mean corpuscular volume. Different blood parameters were also determined and a significant decrease in triglycerides levels appeared with all the microalgal diets, whereas a significant decrease in cholesterol appeared inD. tertiolecta andC. stigmatophora diets.

Notes: Abstract To assess canine exposure to spotted group rickettsiae in the central provinces of Spain, ticks removed from dogs were studied by immunofluorescence (IF) staining. Twenty-eight out of 65 (43.0%) samples from ticks were positive. Sera from 58 dogs were also collected and the presence of antibodies to Rickettsia conorii studied. Thirty-four (58.6%) dogs presented significant titers by IF. Surveillance data from these provinces show the presence of Boutonneuse fever cases during recent years, evidence that dogs could serve as an indicator of rickettsial activity in these areas.

Notes: Summary Thermal analysis of blends poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVF2) with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or polystyrene (PS) filled with sepiolite was carried out to examine the effects of the filler on properties such as melting behaviour and glass transition temperature. For the compatible PVF2/PMMA system, the presence of the filler did not cause any substantial changes in the thermal behaviour of the blend. In the non-compatible PVF2/PS system, some compatibilization is achieved in the blend, indicated by PVF2 melting point depression as well as by a shift of the glass transition of the homopolymers in the blend.

Notes: Summary Inverse gas chromatography (IGC) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to investigate the effect produced by sepiolite on the thermodynamical compatibility of poly(vinylidene fluoride)-polystyrene blends. Polymer-polymer interaction parameters were calculated from the retention data, for various polar and non-polar probes in pure and mixed stationary phases of these polymers, using sepiolite as solid support, as well as from melting point depression analysis of the sepiolite filled blends. Both techniques give us positive values of the interaction parameters, in accordance with the non-compatibility of these blends; However negative values of the interaction parameters were obtained for polystyrene-rich blends (ΦPS ≥ 85 wt%) and high sepiolite loadings, indicating that sepiolite acts as a compatibilizing agent for the system PVF2/PS.

Notes: Summary The surface properties of sepiolite were investigated by inverse gas chromatography. It is shown that the value of the dispersive component change uniformly with temperature, while the values obtained for the parameters KA and KD indicate an acidic character for the sepiolite surface.
