    Notes: Summary Between September 1990 and July 1991, we treated 17 patients with renal-cell carcinoma by radical nephrectomy and two patients with urothelial carcinoma of the kidney pelvis by ureteronephrectomy. Immediately after nephrectomy, perfusion of the kidneys with cold HTK solution was performed and the organs were kept in hypothermia of 8°C. The tumor-free parenchyma of the kidneys was treated 4 h later with shock waves of different energy levels in an experimental shock-wave system (Siemens Company, Erlangen). Light microscopy and examinations by scanning laser microscopy were performed after treatment. High-energy shock waves (HESW) produce significant changes in the tubulary and blood-vessel system of the viable human kidney, depending on the energy applied. Although our model is limited by hypothermia of the explanted kidneys, the effects of shock waves on the organs can be studied. Our model is suitable for testing the effects of different lithotriptors on the human kidney.

    Notes: Abstract Multicellular tumor spheroids (MCTS) grown from the bladder cancer cell line RT112 and from the prostate cancer cell line PCA were exposed to 200 or 800 electromagnetically generated focused ultrasound shock waves. RT112 cells showed a distinct but transient decrease in proliferation whereas the effect of PCA cells was less pronounced. Flow-cytometric measurements of DNA content and Ki67 expression revealed no significant changes in the cell cycle distribution. The capacity of RT112 cells exposed to 800 shock waves to re-grow as MCTS was markedly decreased, indicating an alteration of intercellular adhesion.

    Notes: Total colectomy and the construction of an ileal pouch reservoir that preserves the patient's continence has become a surgical option for the treatment of patients who undergo total colectomy. By using histologic, electron microscopic, and morphometric methods, the histoarchitecture of the terminal ileal pouch, now functioning as a neorectum, was compared with preoperative biopsies from the normal terminal ileum, transverse colon, and rectum from patients undergoing the construction of a pouch as well as controls. Twelve patients, each of which had undergone a total colectomy with an ileal J-pouch anal anastomosis in our hospital between 1984 and 1987, were included in the study. Over a three year period a progressive transformation to a colonic type mucosa was observed in the ileal pouch. While total mucosal thickness remained unchanged, the number and size of the crypts increased dramatically, making some specimens indistinguishable from normal colonic mucosa on histologic examination. The number of mucus producing goblet cells and Paneth cells increased, whereas the endocrine cell population demonstrated no change. The possible metabolic and physiologic consequences of this mucosal transformation are discussed.
