    Notes: The structure of NH3⋅H2S has been determined from microwave and radiofrequency spectroscopy of this complex and its deuterated isotopomers, using molecular beam electric resonance techniques. Rotational constants, electric dipole moments and nitrogen quadrupole coupling constants were obtained from the spectra. The molecule was found to have a linear, hydrogen bonded structure with the ammonia as the proton acceptor. The N⋅⋅⋅S distance is 3.639 A(ring), the root-mean-square angular deviation of the NH3 axis from the N–S axis is 24.6° and the H2S C2 axis is 40.5° from the N–S axis. Although the molecule is an asymmetric rotor, first-order Stark effects were observed for K=1 rotational levels. These Stark effects are caused by torsional oscillations which are essentially ammonia monomer free internal rotation. Similar effects were observed for NH3⋅H2O and are reported here.

    Notes: Summary Selected characteristics of the social environment are tested as predictors of children's risk for obesity. Data were collected during the summer of 1991 at the University of South Alabama Springhill Paediatric Clinic (Mobile, AL, USA). Data were collected on 77 children, aged 2·5–5 years, and their primary caretaker. Obesity risk was measured by the child's weight for height score and calorie intake. Caretaker's socio-economic status, marital status, and social support predict children's obesity risk for this sample. Lower social class position, lower expressive social support, and unmarried status of the caretaker are associated with a higher calorie intake and a higher weight for height score in the child.

    Notes: Monolithic arrays of surface-emitting AlGaAs diode lasers with dry-etched vertical facets and external parabolic deflecting mirrors have been operated with both short and quasi-cw current pulses. The arrays emit at 804 nm with threshold current densities as low as 220 A/cm2 and differential quantum efficiencies as high as 66%. The vertical facets and parabolic deflecting mirrors were formed by using chlorine ion-beam-assisted etching with standard photolithography.

    Notes: Monolithic two-dimensional surface-emitting arrays of strained-layer InGaAs/AlGaAs and AlInGaAs/AlGaAs diode lasers have been fabricated and operated pulsed with low-threshold current densities and differential quantum efficiencies greater than 50%. The InGaAs/AlGaAs arrays emit at 1.03 μm, while the AlInGaAs/AlGaAs arrays emit at 0.815 μm. Thus, it should be possible to fabricate monolithic arrays with comparable performance over a wide wavelength range. The individual lasers of the arrays are horizontal folded-cavity devices with two 45° internal reflectors and two top-surface facets. The design is simple to implement using optical pattern-generator masks, optical projection printing, and chlorine ion-beam-assisted etching in key fabrication steps.

    Notes: The Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain contains many abnormal protein modifications. These include the abnormal processing of amyloid precursor protein (APP) to form the amyloidogenic β/A4 peptide and the abnormal phosphorylation of tau to form A68, the major constituent of the neurofibrillary tangle. In addition, many of the biochemical alterations found in the AD brain are also found in heat-shocked or stressed cells. We used heat-shocked neuronal PC12 cells to investigate the effects of stress on APP and tau. We found that by simply exposing neuronal PC12 cells to an elevated temperature (45°C) for 30 minutes, they exhibited several features characteristic of the heat shock response. These included a 45% reduction in total protein synthesis, the induction of heat shock protein (hsp) 72, and increased phosphorylation of the protein synthesis initiation factor eIF-2 α. The heat-shocked cells also exhibited alterations in the metabolism and phosphorylation of APP. Under heat shock conditions, we found two additional APP-like polypeptides not present in controls and a significant decrease in the phosphorylation state of APP. We also found that an A68-like protein is formed in neuronal PC12 cells when subjected to elevated temperature. This A68-like protein was formed with heat shock even in the absence of protein synthesis, suggesting that its production occurred post-translationally. The tau/A68 polypeptides were identified as phosphoproteins, and the phosphorylation of tau to form A68 was reversed with recovery of the cells from heat shock. Immunoprecipitation of lysates from heat shocked cells with antibodies to hsp72/73 resulted in co-precipitation of tau, but not A68 with hsp72 indicating a stable complex formation between these two proteins. These results suggest that heat shock proteins may play either a protective or promoting role in the formation of A68 and/or the amyloidogenic C-terminal fragment of APP.

    Notes: A method for the quantitative characterization of texture in thin films using x-ray diffraction is presented. The traditional technique, which makes use of a powder diffractometer, relies on peak intensity measurements at normal incidence. By using pole figure measurements and subsequent orientation distribution analysis we obtain the substantially improved coverage necessary to accurately characterize textures of thin silicon films which exhibit great variation and complexity.

    Notes: The reversible dissipation of excitation energy in higher plants is believed to protect against light-induced damage to the photosynthetic apparatus. This dissipation is measured as the non-photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence. A method is described whereby the saturated capacity for rapidly reversible non-photochemical quenching can be compared between plant species. This method was applied to 22 common British plant species whose habitat was quantified using an index that describes shade tolerance. An association was found between occurrence in open habitats and a high capacity for non-photochemical quenching. It was found that, whilst this capacity was species dependent, it did not depend upon the conditions under which the plant was grown. The possible role of zeaxanthin as a determinant of quenching capacity was examined by measuring the contents of xanthophyll cycle carotenoids for each species. Comparing species, no correlation was seen between the saturated level of non-photochemical quenching and zeaxanthin content expressed relative to either total carotenoid or to chlorophyll. When zeaxanthin was expressed relative to the amount of xanthophyll cycle intermediates (zeaxanthin, antheraxanthin and violaxanthin), a weak correlation was seen.

    Notes: The pigment composition of leaves from a number of different plant species collected from field sites in the region of Sheffield, UK, have been compared using high-performance liquid chromatography. Expression of pigment content per unit leaf area was dominated by variation in the total leaf chlorophyll. Neither chlorophyll per unit area nor the chlorophyll a/b ratio were found to be correlated with the habitat from which the plants originated. When the amounts of different carotenoids were expressed relative to the total carotenoid pool, it was found that whilst neither total carotene (α- +β-carotene) nor neoxanthin correlated with ability to grow in shade, the leaf content of both lutein and the total xanthophyll cycle carotenoids (zeaxanthin, anther-axanthin and violaxanthin) did, with lutein content being high in shade species and xanthophyll cycle intermediates low. There was a strong negative correlation between the relative amounts of each of these groups of carotenoids. The ratio of lutein to xanthophyll cycle carotenoids was strongly correlated to an index of shade tolerance.
