Notes: Species of the Solanum nigrum complex, including eastern black nightshade (S. ptycanthum Dun.), are common nuisance plants, and their berries often contaminate agricultural commodities. Black nightshade plants and their fruits contain solanaceous glycoalkaloids, but little information is available regarding their toxicity in vivo. Male and female rats were fed diets containing 0, 1, 5 or 25% (w/w) eastern black nightshade berries (BNB) for 13 weeks. BNB had no effect upon clinical appearance and behavior, body weight, food and water consumption, serum chemical profiles or organ weights. Gross or microscopic lesions related to BNB were not found. Anemia was present in high-dose males after six weeks and in mid-dose males, high-dose males and high-dose females after 13 weeks. Erythrocyte counts, hemoglobin concentrations and hematocrits of these groups were significantly decreased and averaged 81–93% of their respective control values. Erythrocyte counts, hemoglobin concentration and hematocrits of males fed 1% BNB, females fed 1% BNB and females fed 5% BNB averaged 94–97% of the control values after 13 weeks. These findings indicate that ingestion of low to moderate amounts of S. ptycanthum berries does not pose a significant health risk, although anemia may be a potential consequence of prolonged exposure to highly contaminated foodstuffs.

Notes: Summary An internal part of the chloroplast atpA gene has been identified in the mitochondrial DNA of Triticum aestivum. It is located near the 18S-5S ribosomal genes and partially contained within a repeated sequence. Comparison of the transferred sequence with the original ct sequence reveals several nucleotide changes and shows that neither 5′ nor 3′ ends are present in the mt genome. No transcript of this region could be detected by Northern analysis. This sequence is present in mitochondrial genomes of other tetraploid and diploid species of Triticum, also in the vicinity of the 18S-5S ribosomal genes, suggesting a unique transfer event. The date of this event is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The subcellular localization of tryptophan decarboxylase, strictosidine synthase and strictosidine glucosidase in suspension cultured cells of Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don and Tabernaemontana divaricata (L.) R. Br. ex Roem. et Schult, was investigated. It was found that tryptophan decarboxylase is an extra-vacuolar enzyme, whereas strictosidine synthase is active inside the vacuole. Strong indications were obtained for the localization of strictosidine glucosidase on the outside of the tonoplast. The results suggest that tryptamine is transported into the vacuole where it is condensed with secologanin to form strictosidine, and that strictosidine passes the tonoplast and is subsequently hydrolysed outside the vacuole.

Notes: Abstract WIS-2-1A, a 8624 bp insertion in the Glu-1A-2 locus of chromosome 1A of wheat, consists of two 1755 bp long terminal repeats enclosing a 5114 bp internal region. No long open reading frames could be found, but inspection of the predicted amino acid sequence showed regions with homology to retrotransposon structures, including a methionine tRNA initiator binding site, a nucleotide binding domain, a protease, an integrase and a polymerase. DNA replication errors have resulted in frame-shifts in the protein coding region, suggesting that retrotransposition of WIS-2-1A, if it occurs, must be mediated by trans-acting factors.

Notes: Abstract In the final product of a bimodal bigraft ABS, consisting of crosslinked polybutadiene particles (diameter 100 nm) with grafted and ungrafted poly (styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (=SAN) with an acrylonitrile (=AN) content of 28 weight %, crosslinked polybutadiene particles (diameter 300 nm) with grafted and ungrafted SAN with an AN content of 12 weight % and an added SAN with an AN content of 28 weight % the following parameters can be determined: degree of grafting of the small polybutadiene particles, degree of grafting of the large polybutadiene particles, acrylonitrile content of the grafted chains of the small polybutadiene particles, acrylonitrile content of the grafted chains of the large polybutadiene particles, grafting efficiency of the large particles, average particle diameter and particle diameter distribution of the small particles, average particle diameter and particle diameter distribution of the big particles, molar mass distribution of the ungrafted chains of the large particles, chemical distribution of the ungraftd chains of the large particles, molar mass distribution of the SAN resin added, chemical distribution of the SAN resin added. Preparative differential ultracentrifugation in acetone/γ-butyrolacrone (volume ratio 0.55∶0.45), FTIR spectrometry and electron microscopy of the floating and sedimentating fraction yield the degree of grafting and AN content of the graft chains of the large particles and the degree of grafting and AN content of the graft chains of the small particles. Preparative differential centrifugation, FTIR spectrometry and electron microscopy of the fractions give nearly equivalent results. Fractional demixing with the demixing solvents ethylene carbonate/tetraline of the acetone-soluble part yields the SAN with 12 weight % AN in the upper-phase and the SAN with 28 weight % AN in the lower phase. Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and high-performance precipitation liquid chromatography (HPPLC) of the fractions yield the molecular distribution and chemical distribution of the different SAN resins. SEC, coupled with turbidimetric titration of the acetone-soluble fractions withn-hexane as precipirant, indicates SAN resin with lower AN content in addition to the SAN resin with 28 weight % AN.
