Notes: A computational method of absorption correction in X-ray diffractometry for single crystals in the shape of convex polyhedra bathed in an inhomogeneous and in a homogeneous X-ray beam is suggested. An absorption correction is calculated for each reflection of the data set using the measured coordinates of the specimen vertices and the experimentally measured intensity distribution in the primary beam. The program ABSCOR is written in Fortran and may be readily adopted to any four-circle diffractometer and data format. The results of the method described for crystals of different dimensions and different absorption coefficients are given. It is shown that beam inhomogeneity strongly influences the reflection intensity of large non-isometric crystals.

Notes: Commonly occurring structures are considered from the point of view of a crystal-chemical model of atomic interactions. It is shown that these structures sometimes contain coordination polyhedra distinct from Platonic, Archimedean and Zalgaller's polyhedra. These polyhedra have two or more groups of atoms into which all the vertices of the coordination polyhedron can be divided and which differ in distance from the central atom. The reasons for such polyhedra are considered. The crystal structure of NiTi2 is analyzed and the causes of the quasicrystal state are revealed.

Notes: The software package PPXA (programs for precise X-ray analysis) is described, which provides crystallographers with increased precision and reliability of the results of X-ray analysis. The package includes programs for: testing the quality of an automatic four-circle X-ray diffractometer before X-ray experiments; optimization of X-ray diffraction experiments; preliminary processing of experimental data; precise structure analysis up to electron density distribution. The programs for diffractometer testing allow the experimenter to check the stability and precision of the instrument, the homogeneity of the X-ray beam and the detector sensitivity. The programs for preliminary data processing include: corrections for absorption, taking into account the intensity distribution in the X-ray beam cross section; correction or elimination of the simultaneous reflection effect; background subtraction, correcting the effects of the scan-interval cut-off; correction for thermal diffuse scattering (TDS) for crystals in cases of both known and unknown elasticity constants. The programs for precise crystal structure refinement include options for the determination of primary- and secondary-extinction parameters, atomic coordinates, thermal-vibration parameters in harmonic and anharmonic approximations, occupation of atomic positions, atom-core and valence-shell occupation parameters. The programs were written for a MicroVAX-II computer with a VAX/VMS operating system and designed to work with CAD-4 diffractometers and the SDP-Plus software package. A suitable dialogue with a menu system and detailed user's instructions are available.

Notes: Abstract Chromosomal DNA from reference Yersinia strains was digested individually with 9 restriction endonucleases. DNA fragments were separated and analyzed by electrophoresis through agarose gels. The clearest fragment patterns were obtained when Eco RI was employed. the Y. pestis fragment pattern obtained after the use of this enzyme showed the presence of a unique DNA fragment with molecular mass 1400 bp. This DNA fragment was cloned, purified, labeled with 32P and then used to probe Eco RI digests of all three Yersinia species. A strong hybridization signal was obtained with Y. pestis strain. No such signal was found with Y. pseudotuberculosis or Y. enterocolitica. These results indicate that the DNA fragment is species specific and could be used as a diagnostic DNA probe for Y. pestis.

Notes: Abstract The low molecular mass protein antigens in PPD from M. bovis BCG were chemically oligomerized using sulfosuccinimidyl-4-(p-maleimidophenyl)-butyrate (S-SMPB) as a crosslinking agent. Protein oligomers with molecular mass over 90 kDa were obtained and used for the preparation of hyperimmune polyclonal rabbit antiserum. Using this antiserum four protein bands with molecular mass 120, 90, 75 and 65 kDA were detected in immunoblotting analysis of sonic extract from M. bovis BCG separated in SDS-polyacrylamide gel. We suggest that these immunoreactive proteins in the sonic extract represent the native forms of the heat stable low molecular mass protein antigens in PPD.

Notes: Abstract The study of the Vlasov-Maxwell system is reduced to nonlinear elliptic equations in the stationary case and hyperbolic equations in the nonstationary case. On this basis, theorems on the existence of solutions and sufficient conditions of Lyapunov stability are obtained. The cases are considered when electromagnetic fields and distribution functions can be constructed in an implicit form.

Notes: Abstract In the restricted three-body problem we consider the motion of a viscously elastic sphere (planet) with its centre of mass moving in a conditionally-periodic orbit. The approximate equations describing the rotational motion of the sphere in terms of the Andoyer variables are obtained by the method of the separation of motion and averaging; the evolution of the motion is also analysed.

Notes: Summary The ultraviolet irradiation of air-saturated alcoholic solutions of 3-acetyl-3,4-dihydrocoumarin (1) leads to the formation of 3-acetylcoumarin (2) and 3,3′-diacetyl-3,3′,4,4′-tetrahydro-4,4′-biscoumarin (3). The presence of molecular oxygen is an indispensable condition for the occurrence of a photodehydrogenation process, which is quantitatively when effected on silica gel.

Notes: Abstract Isotope shifts and hyperfine structures in three optical transitions of HfI are investigated. Magnetic dipole coupling constant A and electric quadrupole coupling constant B of four atomic levels for both stable odd-even isotopes177Hf and179Hf are determined. Nuclear charge radii changesδ〈r 2〉 of the stable Hf isotopes and182 Hf (T 1/2=9×106 y) are extracted using the standard semiempirical procedure. Strong deviation from muonic atom data onδ〈r 2〉 is observed. The course of theδ〈r 2〉 dependence on mass number indicates changes in nuclear deformation at A=174 and influence of higher order deformations on nuclear shape in this region.
