Notes: The mechanism in which two-plasmon decay (TPD) waves have to propagate in the density gradient of a laser-irradiated plasma in order to scatter (3/2)-harmonic photons is shown not to be able to explain most features of observed (3/2)ω0 spectra. Instead, a process of mode coupling of TPD to ion waves, generated by stimulated Brillouin scattering, is proposed and analyzed. It is shown that all significant features of measured (3/2)ω0 spectra can be explained by this model. One important result indicates that these spectra can provide a good thermometer for laser-irradiated plasmas with a quarter-critical density.
