Notes: Abstract: The twitcher mutant mouse, the animal model of Krabbe disease (human globoid cell leukodystrophy), is characterized by apparent deficiency of galactosylceramide β-galactosidase activity. Saposin A and C, the heat-stable small sphingolipid activator glycoproteins, stimulate the activity of galactosylceramide β-galactosidase as well as glucosylceramide β-glucoside. The role of these saposins in the twitcher mutation was investigated. Boiled supernatant fractions, which contained saposins, were prepared from homogenates of twitcher brain, liver, kidney, and spleen. These preparations showed an almost identical effect on the activity of purified glucosylceramide β-glucosidase (measured by hydrolysis of 4-methylumbelliferyl-β-glucoside) with similar preparations from control tissues. The effect on the activity of galactosylceramide 4bT-galactosidase as well as 4-methylum-belliferyl-β-glucoside β-glucosidase in the twitcher brain and liver homogenates by authentic saposin A and C was similar to that in control tissues. These results suggest that the twitcher mutation does not affect the concentrations of saposin A or C or their interaction with galactosylceramide β-galactosidase.

Notes: Abstract Eighty-five non-referred school children were divided into four groups based upon the IOWA Conners Teacher's Questionnaire: pure hyperactive (HYP), pure aggressive (AGG), mixed hyperactive/aggressive (HYP/AGG), and normal controls. The groups were compared on neurobehavioral tests believed to assess inattention and impulsivity. A continuous performance test indicated that the HYP group was more inattentive than the other groups and the HYP/AGG group was most impulsive. The AGG group did not differ from controls. The data support the distinction between HYP, AGG and HYP/AGG groups of children selected by the IOWA Conners.

Notes: The belief in the endless progress of men materially and morally has notstood the test of time. The wars and atrocities of the twentieth centuryhave shown that evil resides within man himself. Discusses the role ofDarwinism and science; despite much criticism, the evolutionistscontinue to ride high in the fields of education and science. Thegradual displacement of religion as a subject worthy of study has nowreached its zenith. Discusses the Nazi Holocaust and the Gulag Obletion.Solzhenitsyn attributed all the evils of Soviet Communism toMarxist-Leninist ideology and the rejection of traditional religion andmoral values. Concludes that Western society is like a ship without arudder.

Notes: Solzhenitsyn, former Zek and Nobel Laureate, found the causes of thecruelty of which the Communists were capable to lie in theMarxist-Leninist ideology. The atheistic Communists had substitutedtheir ideology for the values of Christianity which had stood theRussians in good stead and had perdured the test of time. TheCommunists were bent on stamping out religion. They arrested priests, nuns and those who practised their beliefs. Solzhenitsyn sees inreligion the anodyne to Russia's ills.

Notes: Howard Mayer Brown's stimulating paper pays greatest attention to the centrality of Ronsard as the fons et origo for musical settings. One often has the impression, reading the paper, that there was no substantial problem of imitation in these settings: the composers simply took the words supplied by Ronsard and set them to music. In the comments which follow, I want to suggest a different approach to this question of imitation within Renaissance poetry and to ask what effect the issue of imitation itself had in the dialogue between poetry and music in mid sixteenth-century France. The focus I shall be using is the Anacreon of 1554.

Notes: Abstract Computed tomography (CT) was used in a prospective study of the sacroiliac joints in 86 patients with Crohn disease to determine the type and frequency of sacroiliac joint abnormalities present in this population. The CT findings were correlated with review of the clinical history in 64 patients. Computed tomography demonstrated changes of sacroiliitis in 29% of the study group. This high prevalence of sacroiliac joint abnormality was found even in those under 30 years of age. It exceeds the 11–19% previously reported from plain film examination, reflecting the greater sensitivity of CT. In the subgroup of 64 patients studied clinically, 19 (30%) had abnormal sacroiliac joints on CT, but only 2 (3%) reported symptoms related to the sacroiliac joints.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This paper reviews the principles, developments and concepts embodied in the experience gained over 10 years with simultaneous combined anterior and posterior fusion (SCAPF) of the spine in over 750 patients. The procedure was initially designed for the surgical treatment of failed post-discectomy syndromes. Indications have expanded due to increasing experience and the rapid, predictable fusion which accompanies this technique. The current technique allows for a solid anterior fusion combined with extensive posterior decompression and removal of the primary anatomical pain sources involved with low back pain and disability.

Notes: Abstract The emphasis in classroom learning research has moved from process-product models to the mediating process paradigm. The stimulated-recall interview and thik aloud techniques are the two main processes that have been used in attempts to find out what goes on inside students' heads while they are learning. For example, this researcher has used the stimulated-recall interview technique to identify the workplace thinking of a marine science researcher, and the in-class thinking of a year eleven biology student. Such studies as these have produced findings with important implications for the classroom teacher in the role of action researcher. This paper describes how to conduct stimulated-recall interviews and discusses some classroom implications from the two studies.
