Notes: Abstract Solutions to problems of pure elastoplastic torsion in surface-plasticized and surface-hardened rods are given. The distribution of residual tangential stresses along the rod radius is shown to have an oscillating and sign-alternating character in both cases. In surface-plasticized rods, in contrast to surface-hardened rods, the residual stresses in the external layer always have the opposite sign with respect to the active loading stresses produced by the outer torsional moment. Conclusions have been drawn about the character of the defect structure changes as well as about the conditions of sample fracture under cyclic torsional tests during the action of alternating outer force moments.

Notes: Abstract The conditions of plastic-to-brittle transition during microscratching with a Vickers diamond indentor of natural cleavage surfaces of lithium fluoride (LiF) single crystals (pure samples and those covered with octadecylamine films) in heptane, distilled water, and their saturated aqueous solution, were studied. Indentor loads varied in the range 3.2×10−3-1.9×10−1 N; indent or sliding velocity was 30 μm s−1. Quantitative characteristics of microplasticity and microbrittleness of near-surface layers in single crystals under appropriate test conditions were studied. The basic mechanisms of crack formation in non-uniform indentor-induced fields of stresses and deformations were revealed and the active media effect on the relative intensity of the functioning of these mechanisms was analysed.

Notes: Abstract The distribution of residual stresses in rectangular beams after loading by clear bending in inactive, surface-plasticizing and surface-hardening media was investigated. It was found that the residual stresses in a more plastic structural component are typically opposite in sign to active load stresses, whereas in a harder component they are coincident with the latter. The influence of residual stresses on the point defect distribution in the samples after deformation is discussed.
