Notes: The aim of the present study was to determine the degree of osseointegration of fixtures in different onlay grafting materials. Hydroxylapatite blocks of 2 different pore sizes and free monocortical bone grafts from the iliac crest were inserted in Gijttingen minipigs and fixed with 2 titanium fixtures. The extent of the bone/implant interface area on the fixture surface was determined from histological specimens by morphometric measurements and related to the total thread surface of the fixtures. Fixtures inserted into bone grafts showed the most complete degree of osseointegration, whereas the smallest bone/implant interface area was found with fixtures inserted into those HA blocks with the smaller pore size. There was a significant decrease in the degree of osseointegration between the host bone site and the augmentation material only with the fixtures inserted into the HA blocks of smaller pore size.

Notes: Summary The decolourisation of wastewater from a pigment plant by the white-rot fungus Pycnoporus cinnabarinus was studied in a packed-bed bioreactor. Decolourisation was first observed 48 to 72 h after inoculation and was followed using UV/VIS spectrophotometry. An assessment of the inhibitory properties of the effluent on the growth of Pycnoporus cinnabarinus showed that this fungus can tolerate high levels of potentially toxic waste.

Notes: A technique is presented that allows the visualization of the degradation process of biopolymers. Serial thick-section specimens containing cross-sections of polydioxanone implants (PDAs) were realigned for 3-D reconstruction using a double-embedding technique. The outlines of the cross-sectioned implants were traced using an automatic image analysis system and converted into x, y, and z coordinates. The reconstruction of the implant body was achieved by the stepwise analysis of vertical relationships between two adjacent section levels. The surface was approximated by triangulation and calculated from the surface triangles. Visualization was achieved by introducing the data into commercially available software using z-buffering and Gouraud shading. The geometric precision of the reembedding technique was found to be 0.8-1.5% of the screen width; recovering experiments showed a good approximation to the actual physical volume of unresorbed implants (±2.6%). The error of volume determination due to the limited resolution in the z direction was calculated to be acceptable (〈5.0%) in isotropic objects where the ratio between the radius of the surface curvature and the distance between the sections is 〉4. Results indicate that large devices of PDAs are degraded in vivo in a fashion similar to that previously described for in vitro degradation of PLA molded screws by a surface/center differentiation with formation of hollow residuals after 17 weeks and complete degradation with phagocytosis of microparticles after 26 weeks. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description / Table of Contents: Cyclic Thiophosphates, Products from the Reaction of Elemental Phosphorus with Alkylammonium PolysulfidesWhite Phosphorus reacts very rapidly above its melting point with alkylammonium polysulfide solutions in chloroform or dimethylformamide. The reaction products are mixtures of thiophosphates, which contain compounds with phosphorus in different oxidation states. The composition of these mixtures may be changed by varying the amounts of applied polysulfidic sulfur and alkylamine. Several cyclic thiophosphates have been isolated from the mixtures in good yields; some contain P—P bonds.
