Results of the Representative Soil Sampling Scheme between 1978 and 1988 show that soil acidity remains widespread, particularly in Wales, and suggest that the proportions of grassland with low pH increased during this period in the traditional grassland areas of England and Wales.Average soil nutrient levels changed little over the decade. However, at least one in five grassland fields are likely to suffer yield restrictions because of shortage of soil P or K (index 0). One in four arable fields were found to be at index 1 for K, indicating that many crops are being grown at potassium levels which can be described as borderline. On the other hand, 22% of arable crops were grown at phosphate index levels in excess of 3, so phosphate savings could be made on many crops. Texture and calcium carbonate levels and their relationships with nutrient levels are also examined.

    Notes: There are increasing numbers of patients admitted to hospital as a result of ingesting amphetamine-like drugs. The most severe cases exhibit hyperthermia, rhabdomyolysis, coagulopathy and renal failure. We describe six such patients with varying severity of intoxication, and have reviewed the recent literature with particular reference to the use of dantrolene. One of our patients died but the others all survived. There is little evidence that dantrolene influenced the outcome in patients reported to date. We believe that a controlled trial should be carried out in amphetamine-related hyperthermia before the use of dantrolene becomes widespread.

    Notes: Supplemental far-red (FR) illumination of light-grown grass seedlings inhibits tiller production while enhancing leaf elongation. Although much is known about FR enhancement of internode elongation in dicots, relatively little research has been conducted to determine the effects of FR on monocot development. In growth chamber experiments, fibre optics were used to direct supplemental FR to elongating leaf blades, main stem bases and mature leaf blades of light-grown barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) seedlings. Our objective was to identify specific sites of perception for FR enhancement of leaf elongation and inhibition of tiller production, and to assess potential FR effects on tiller senescence. Far-red illumination of elongating leaves or of the main stem base reduced the total number of tillers per plant, primarily by reducing secondary and tertiary tiller production, and enhanced leaf elongation. However, leaf elongation was less sensitive to stem base treatments than to illumination of the elongating blade. Increased leaf length resulted from increased leaf elongation rate, while the duration of leaf elongation was unaffected. Exposure of mature leaf blades to FR had no effect on tillering or leaf elongation. None of the FR treatments led to tiller senescence. Localization of FR perception in vertically oriented tissues such as elongating blades and stem bases permits early detection of reflected light from neighbouring plants, allowing rapid response to impending competition.

    Response to late season nitrogen of upland swards in Wales (1991)

    Notes: During 1984 and 1985, trials at sixteen sites throughout Wales measured the yield response in upland swards from applying 40 and 80 kg N ha−1 at three dates, 20 August, 4 September and 18 September. All sites were between 230 m and 345 m above sea level. Grass yields were measured by cutting plots during October and November.Nitrogen increased the herbage dry-matter (DM) yield at all sites in both years. The yield response per kg N applied varied between sites. Mean yield response for the two years declined from 16·2 kg DM kg N−1 with 40 kg N ha−1 applied on 20 August to 8·9 kg DM kg N−1 with 80 kg N ha−1 applied on 18 September. In general there was a decline in response to N with increased rate and delay in time of application. The results indicate that responses above an optimum of 9 kg DM kg N−1 can be obtained well into September. A general rule that 1 kg N can be economically applied per 4 summed day degrees air temperature 〉6 °C remaining in the autumn up to 30 November is suggested.Delay in application and increasing N rate increased crude protein in the herbage but had only small effects on modified acid detergent (MAD) fibre and sugar. Generally, grass quality was good. Sward density assessed during the spring after nitrogen had been applied appeared to have been unaffected by the treatments.

    Notes: Abstract Liposarcoma in childhood is rare. A case of a myxoid liposarcoma arising at the porta hepatis is reported in a 3-year-old boy with initial favourable response to surgery combined with radio- and chemotherapy. Fatal recurrence occurred at age 15 years. The radiological and sonographic findings of liposarcomas are reviewed.
