Notes: Absorption, emission, and excitation spectra of Ce-doped Gd2 SiO5 have been measured. The emission spectrum is decomposed into two Gaussian bands corresponding to the transitions from Ce3+ 5d 2 T2 to two 4f levels of 2 F7/2 and 2 F5/2 . It is found that the energy difference between ground 2 F5/2 and 2 F7/2 levels varies from 2004 to 1326 cm−1 with increasing Ce concentration from 0.2% to 1%. Concentration quenching is weak in Ce-doped Gd2 SiO5 compared with that in the laser and fluorescent materials. The energy-level structure is determined for Ce3+ in Gd2 SiO5 based on the analyses of the optical spectra. The spectral characteristics indicate that the Ce-doped Gd2 SiO5 crystal is suitable for the application to the scintillation detector.

Notes: [Auszug] Studies (T.C. and T.H.W., unpublished) have shown that the morphology of the sympathetic interneurone is considerably more complex and shows more species diversity than is sometimes appreciated, which raises the possibility ?of major species differences in its 'biochemistry and in the mechanisms ...

Notes: Abstract Lifetime spectra of some sulphides, AlN, and SiC consist of two components. Temperature dependences of the spectra of Sb2S3 were investigated from 296–723 K and analyzed with a non-trapping model. It was estimated that cation vacancies due to nonstoichiometry were responsible for the τ2 component.

Notes: Abstract The wave function of a positron in ReO3 is calculated using the augmented-plane-wave method. Due to the loosely-packed structure of ReO3, the ground-stateГ 1 wave function exhibits a marked anisotropy particularly around the oxygen ions, and a large fraction of a positron is distributed in the interstitial region. Experimental results of the positron annihilation 2γ correlations and the positron annihilation rates in ReO3 are discussed based on the positron wavefunction.

Notes: Abstract Positron lifetime measurements have been performed inn-type andp-type germanium single crystals deformed by compression. The results are compared with those of deformed GaAs single crystals obtained by the authors previously. In bothn andp-type germanium the lifetime τ1 and its intensityI 1 decreased with deformation. Using the trapping model, the trapping rates of positrons by dislocations are obtained, which in turn gave the cross width of the dislocation as 20.0 Å and 8.2 Å forn-type andp-type germanium, respectively. In terms of Read's model the fraction of the dangling bonds occupied by electrons is obtained to 0.26 in then-type germanium. This value was smaller than those obtained forn-type GaAs, i.e., 0.46 and 0.50 for Ga- and As-dislocation, respectively. It is found that doping causes the trapping of positrons. Inp-type germanium the fractionf was determined to 0.25 in terms of Schröter and Labusch's model.

Notes: Abstract Females heterozygous for the X-linked urea cycle disorder, ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency have a significant risk of developing hyperammonaemia. Diagnosis of this genetic defect in a proband is the essential starting point for family studies. By an immunohistochemical analysis of the liver specimens fixed in 10% formalin, we confirmed heterozygous status for OTC deficiency in two female patients, a 15-year-old girl and a 2-year-old girl, who died of hyperammonaemia. Since most affected males lack cross reactive materials (CRM), an immunochemical analysis should be useful for the diagnosis of most heterozygous females.

Notes: Summary Inasmuch as precise correlations of light- and electronmicroscopy are crucial for understanding biostructure, it seemed necessary to bring together the advantages of the glyoxylic acid (GA) method (for inducing monoamine fluorescence) and electron microscopy. A combined fluorescence and electron microscope method using GA is introduced. The brain is perfused by 2% GA in Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate buffer (pH 7.0) and this solution is followed by 4% paraformaldehyde containing 0.5% glutaraldehyde in Sorensen's phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). Sections are cut by cryostat or by vibratome and incubated in 2% GA in phosphate buffer (pH 7.0). Using fluorescence microscopy, features of interest are sketched and/or photographed. Afterwards, the same or subsequent section is processed for electron microscopy. Since axons of catecholamine-containing neurons (as well as their perikarya and terminals) are visualized by GA, the recommended procedure expands the range of studies concerning monoamine neurons that can now be carried out effectively.

Notes: Abstract In order to reduce the stress concentration around a hole in a plate, new, “analogue” reinforcements instead of reinforcing rings were used in this investigation. In two of these specimens, reinforcements with different volume fractions were arranged to coincide with the stress trajectories for an infinite plate with a hole under uniaxial tension. Two other specimens containing straight rectangular-grid-type reinforcements were made by using a photofabrication method. Specimens were then prepared by sandwiching these reinforcements between two epoxy-resin plates. Plane specimens, i.e., without reinforcement, were also made of the same epoxy resin for comparison. The stress concentrations at the edge of the hole under uniaxial tension were determined by photoelastic techniques. The measured stress-concentration factors were compared with well-known values for an infinite, isotropic, homogeneous plate containing a hole. Results were also compared with published data on [90/0/90/0]s 7-ply laminated composite plates, and on plates strengthened with reinforcing rings. A definite reduction in stress concentration was observed on specimens containing analogue reinforcement.

Notes: Summary Small intensily fluorescent (SIF) cells in the superior cervical ganglion of the cow, cat, rabbit, rat, guinea pig and monkey were studied, using the glyoxylic acid monoamine fluorescence method. SIF cell populations per mg ganglion tissue showed great species variation. The greatest numbers of SIF cells per mg were found in the rat (380±30 per mg). Intermediate numbers (76±20 per mg) were found in the guinea pig; and SIF cells in other species were much more sparsely distributed (less than 10 per mg). Two types of SIF cell were identified. Type I cells have long (up to 200 μ) processes which ramify among the principal ganglionic neurons, and this type often occurs singly; whereas type II cells tend to occur in clusters near blood vessels in the interstitial or subcapsular regions of the ganglion. As a general hypothesis we propose that type I SIF cells are interneurons whereas type II SIF cells operate through a neurosecretory mechanism.
