    Notizen: A fully implicit numerical method for linear parabolic free boundary problems with coupled and integral boundary conditions is described. The partial differential equation and the boundary conditions are time discretized with the method of lines. An auxiliary function is introduced to remove the coupled and integral boundary conditions from the resulting free boundary problem for ordinary differential equations. Once separated boundary conditions are obtained, invariant imbedding is used to solve the free boundary problem numerically. The method is illustrated by solving the heat transfer equations for the fluidized-bed coating of a thin-walled cylinder.

    Notizen: The Crystal multicomputer at the Computer Sciences Department of the University of Wisconsin-Madison allows the exploration of parallel numerical algorithms by providing a collection of loosely-coupled minicomputers of substantial computing power (currently, twenty VAX 11/750's) that can exchange data in an efficient manner via messages. Very promising results have already been obtained through through the use of Crystal on nonlinear traffic assignment problems. Additional applications of Crystal are in progress for generalized network flow problems. SOR methods for linear programming, and multigrid methods.

    Notizen: The pressure distribution over the profile of a body in fluid flow influences the forces, moments and flow separation on it. It is therefore often advantageous to design a profile in such a way that a predetermined pressure distribution is obtained over the final profile. In this paper a numerical procedure is proposed for calculating the profile corresponding to a given pressure distribution. The procedure employs a transformed version of the potential flow equation for the stream function, which makes the method very effective. Predicted profiles are verified against an analytical solution and against the profile of a NACA 0015 aerofoil. The measured pressure distribution on a calculated axisymmetrical profile is also found to compare favourably with its prescribed pressure distribution.
