Notes: The B 1Πu–X 1Σ+g band system of the K2 molecule is investigated by Doppler-free polarization spectroscopy in a heat pipe oven. The transitions are measured in the region of 615 to 660 nm including vibrational levels up to v″=17 in the X state and all vibrational levels of the B state up to the dissociation limit. A Fabry–Perot interferometer is calibrated using metastable neon and K2 secondary wavelength standards to provide absolute accuracy in the frequency determination of less than 20 MHz. The comprehensive study of the band system is completed by LIF measurements to determine vibrational levels of the ground state up to v‘=62. A detailed analysis has been completed and the coefficients are given in a Dunham expansion that accurately represents the frequencies of lines with specified vibrational and rotational quantum numbers. The B and X potential curves and the Franck–Condon factors for the transitions between B and X states are determined. The dissociation energies have been found to be 4447±15 cm−1 for the X state and 2113±15 cm−1 for the B state. The height of the potential barrier of the B state above the 4 2P3/2+4 2S1/2 atomic levels is 295±17 cm−1 at an internuclear distance of 8.1±0.1 A(ring).

Notes: The non-ionic surfactants, Tween 20 (polyoxy-ethylene 20 sorbitan monolaurate) and Renex 36 (polyoxyethylene 6-tridecyl ether) enhanced the retention of a glyphosate-dye spray solution by barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) leaves. Tween 20 also enhanced absorption of 14C-glyphosate applied as droplets to barley leaves whereas Renex 36 similarly applied, reduced both absorption and movement of 14C-glyphosate. Renex 36 alone or mixed with glyphosate increased leakage of electrolytes from barley leaf segments whereas neither Tween 20 nor glyphosate, alone or mixed together, had any effect. No 14C-glyphosate complexes were detected in mixtures with either surfactant and neither surfactant affected the pH of the glyphosate solution. The results indicate that the reported enhancement of glyphosate phytotoxicity by Tween 20 is due to increased retention and absorption of the herbicide while the reported antagonism caused by Renex 36 is due to reduced glyphosate absorption and movement possibly as a result of alteration of membrane integrity.

Notes: Abstract A lithium-6 atomic beam is spin-polarized by means of optical pumping with a single-mode dye laser operating on the resonance transition. Simultaneous pumping of both hyperfine substates is achieved by frequency-splitting the laser light with an acousto-optic modulator. A polarization dependent signal, obtained by probing the optical activity of the beam with linearly polarized light, is utilized in a microprocessor-controlled laser stabilization scheme. The polarization is analyzed with a sextupole magnet and its overall value is 0.70 for an intensity of 1×1014 atms s−1. By reversing the sense of circular polarization of the pumping light the atomic beam polarization is easily reversed in direction.

Notes: Abstract The mode of action of the photosynthetic inhibitor produced byPandorina morum was examined by exposingVolvox globator and isolated spinach chloroplasts to a partially purified inhibitor preparation. Oxygen evolution ofVolvox, whole chloroplasts, and broken chloroplasts (-Calvin cycle) was reduced indicating that the substances inhibit the light reactions of photosynthesis. Oxygen evolution studies of other Volvocaceae confirmed the observation thatPandorina morum is not significantly influenced by its own inhibitor. Molecular weight approximation by gel filtration established that the inhibitor has a low, molecular weight (probably below 100 mw).
