Notes: We have developed an imaging photoelectron spectrometer based on a simple electrostatic immersion lens with the capability of measuring photoemission intensity as a function of the parallel component of electron wave vector throughout the Brillouin zone. The image is a simple rectilinear mapping of the k(parallel) component of the wave vector in reciprocal space. Using a retarding field-energy selection system, it is possible to energy select and image the various states below the Fermi energy. We obtain an energy resolution of 0.3 eV and a k(parallel) resolution of 0.04 A(ring)−1. The distribution of photocurrent is amplified onto a phosphor screen by a channel electron multiplier array. The image on the screen is then picked up with a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera so that the digitized image can be both position and energy analyzed. The performance of the system is demonstrated by imaging the photoelectron distribution from a Cu(001) single crystal. We find that the intensity distribution of emission in k space reflects the dispersion of the projected bulk energy band structure.

Notes: Summary A 3-year intervention programme with parents of severely subnormal pre-school children is described. Two experimental groups, one visited individually at 2-week intervals and one similarly at 8-week intervals are compared with a third distal contrast group receiving no intervention. Analyses of successive IQ changes in all three groups showed that the less frequently visited group made greater progress after 2 years than that receiving more visits but that this difference disappeared after 3 years. The contrast non-intervention group made fewer gains overall than either of the two experimental groups. Four questions are discussed: the maintenance of early gains, the influence of social class, the optimal level of intervention and the meaning of successful intervention to parents. Evaluation of the project is concerned with experimental efficiency, methodology, and the problems of partnership.

Notes: The downstream movement of young trout and salmon in relation to water velocity was studied in simulated river channels. The results are interpreted as showing that these young salmonids pass through a short period when they are very vulnerable to downstream displacement by flow. Behavioural differences between the two species are considered with the influence on fish movement of changing rate of water velocity, light and temperature.

Notes: The anatomy and morphology of the digestive tract of the eel was examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. The oeosphagus showed complex longitudinal folding; stratified epithelium, columnar epithelium and goblet cells striated muscle fibres formed the thick muscular coat. The pneumatic duct entered the oesophagus anterior to the oesophagastric junction. The Y shaped stomach showed large well developed folds which decreased in size and number towards the pyloric sphincter. Columnar epithelium and gastric gland cells were present, the latter being absent from the pyloric region. The intestine had a heavily thickened anterior region, signs of convulation were noted prior to the ileorectal valve. Intestinal folding showed a complex reticulate pattern with columnar epithelium and goblet cells present. The mucopolysaccharides were studied in the goblet and columnar cells throughout the regions of the gut. Lymphocytes and eosinophilic type cells were found in the connective tissue of the mucosa throughout the gut. The pancreas was a compact organ with few Islets of Langerhans, beta cells were peripherally situated and alpha cells centrally. The unilobular liver acted as a storage organ for oil and glycogen.

Notes: This paper describes the gravel type and structure of brown trout spawning gravels in Teesdale, the flow characteristics of the spawning sites and the size of redds. Factors influencing redd size are investigated and it is concluded that female size is a major factor. Relationships are established between various redd characteristics and the fork length of female fish. The findings are discussed in relation to the existing literature concerning salmonid spawning sites.

Notes: THIS PAPER EXAMINES the use of water in the generation of electricity in England and Wales and describes the measures taken to reduce the environmental consequences of this use. Potential effects on water quality that may arise indirectly from activities other than water use are also discussed. The first part of the paper deals with a range of topics that are generally common to the generation of electricity by either of the principal means - fossil fuel (coal and oil) combustion and nuclear energy. The second part of the paper deals specifically with the discharge of radioactive materials that may affect the aquatic environment.

Notes: Structured beef was prepared with eight combinations of the ingredients (sodium alginate, calcium carbonate, lactic acid/calcium lactate) used to bind meat with the algin/calcium gelation mechanism at nine pH values (4.1–6.4) in order to evaluate their influence on its physical and sensory characteristics. Products with alginate alone were similar to samples from the treatment without binders. The combination of alginate/calcium/lactate gave products of higher values (P〉0.05) for parameters such as hardness in the raw state, bind and penetration than all other treatments. Decreasing pH values increased raw and cooked product hardness and penetration force. Products of pH values 5.7–5.8 were superior to other treatments in bind scores evaluated by a sensory panel.
