Notes: Abstract Experiments on the reaction:3He+3He→4He+2He using a single four detector telescope have shown evidence for the production of deuteron pulses, consistent with the2He→2H+e++v fusion reaction in the final state. New measurements on the same reaction using improved techniques viz.A) a windowless3He gas target andB) α- d correlation detection with 5 ns resolving time and antipileup circuitry have been performed. Calibrations were obtained from the7Li+3He→2H+4He+4He reaction spectra. The correlation angles were 30° and 97° for the alphas and deuterons respectively. Deuteron pulses have been observed, correlated with alpha particles. A cross section of (1.7 ±0.5)nbsr−1MeV−1 was obtained consistent with previous measurements using a single telescope.

Notes: In this paper, the effects of selecting initial vectors on computation efficiency for a subspace iteration method are investigated. Four algorithms are used for selecting the initial vectors. First, arbitrary starting iteration vectors are chosen according to Bathe and Wilson's algorithm.1 In the other algorithms, the initial vectors are the retrieved eigenvectors from the Guyan and quadratic reduction methods. Improvement of the eigenvalue approximations of the subspace iteration method over reduction methods is presented. The computation effort is examined for the various algorithms used for initial iteration vectors.

Notes: The architectural and histochemical properties of the anatomically distinct compartments of the semitendinosus muscle (ST) of mice, rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits show that the ST is composed of two separate compartments aligned in series - a destal compartment (STd) and a proximal one (STp). The STp is further subdivided into a ventral head (STpv) and a dorsal head (STpd). The muscle fibers were arranged in parallel to the line of muscle pull within each compartment. The STd has the longest and the STpv the shortest fibers in all species. The physiological cross-sectional area and the estimated tetanic tension was greatest in the STd. Based on the staining pattern for myosin ATPase (alkaline preincubation) and an oxidative indicator (NADH or SDH), the STpv has the highest percentage of slow-oxidative (SO) or SO plus fast-oxidative-glycolytic (FOG) fibers of any portion of the muscle. The differences in fiber-type distributions and architectural designs of the separate compartments suggest a specialization of function of the individual compartments.

Notes: Near infrared reflectance analysis (NIRA) provides a quick and reliable method for the measurement of end and functional groups in polymers and polymeric products. Feasible applications of Technicon InfraAlyzer for the simultaneous determination of OH and COOH numbers from polyester resins, and percent nitrogen estimation in crosslinkable acrylamido derivatives of partially esterified cellulosic materials were studied. The analytical results obtained show that NIRA techniques provide accurate and precise measurement of functional and end groups from the polymer samples used for this study. In addition, the statistical data showed that the number of samples used in learning sets were adequate for the generation of reliable calibration equations.

Notes: The mechanism(s) by which heparin influences the biological activities of acidc and basic fibroblast growth factors (aFGF and bFGF) is not completely understood. One mechanism by which heparin could alter the biological activities of aFGF and bFGF is by altering their biological half-lives. We investigated the possibility that heparin potentiates aFGF-induced neurite outgrowth from PC12 cells by prolonging its biological half-life. Under conditions where heparin potentiated aFGF-induced neurite outgrowth, we observed that heparin increased the biological half-life of aFGF from 7 to 39 hr. We determined that 〉25 hr of exposure to active aFGF was required for induction of neurite outgrowth. If aFGF activity was maintained for greater than 25 hr by periodic readdition of factor, heparin no longer potentiated aFGF-induced neurite outgrowth. These observations strongly suggest that heparin potentiates the activity of aFGF by prolonging its biological half-life. The protease inhibitors hirudin, leupeptin, and pepstatin A did not potentiate aFGF-induced neurite outgrowth, indicating that proteases inhibited by these inhibitors are not responsible for the loss of aFGF activity that we observed. However, aprotinin potentiated aFGF neurite-promoting activity approximately sevenfold, indicating that proteases that are inhibited by aprotinin are at least partially responsible for aFGF inactivation. These observations suggest that heparin regulates the activity of aFGF by regulating its proteolytic degradation, thereby regulating its biological half-life.

Notes: Adult male albino rats were assigned randomly to control (CON) and weight-lifting (WL) groups. The WL rats were subjected to a progressive weight-lifting program against high resistance for 8 weeks. During the last 2 weeks, each WL rat lifted a load equal to 130% of its body weight. The mean weight of the adductor longus muscle was significantly increased in the WL group (p 〈 0.05). This increased muscle weight was shown to be due to an increase in the number of fibers per unit cross-sectional area (p 〈 0.05), and the mean sizes of both fast-twitch oxidative glycolytic and slow-twitch oxidative fibers were significantly smaller in the WL rats than in the CON rats (p 〈 0.05). Light and electron microscopic examination showed that five out of eight WL rats exhibited longitudinally split muscle fibers, while only one CON rat had a few centrally placed nuclei. The splitting process appeared as either a “pinching-off” of a small segment from the parent fiber or an invagination of the sarcolemma deep into the muscle fiber in a plane parallel to the sarcomeres. There were preliminary indications that this work-induced fiber-splitting process may be a physiological adaptation of muscle to the stress of exercise.

Notes: Biological effects of class 1 or class 2 heparin-binding growth factors (HBGFs) were compared in BALB/c-3T3 cells. Changes in protein synthesis, as monitored by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, reveal that while both HBGFs induce the same changes in the synthesis of intracellular proteins, class 2 HBGF selectively increases the synthesis of a 43-kD extracellular protein. Heparin, which potentiates the mitogenic activity of class 1 but not class 2 HBGF, does not potenitate the changes in protein synthesis elicited by HBGF-1. Since each HBGF increases actin synthesis, regulation of actin mRNA expression was examined. Actin mRNA levels increase rapidly and transiently in response to either HBGF, and similar superinduction responses are observed in the presence of HBGF and cycloheximide. Although the maximum increase in actin mRNA stimulated by either HBGF is similar, the levels of mRNA induced by class 2 HBGF remain elevated up to 48 hours compared to the level induced by class 1 HBGF. These results imply that in the same cell type class 1 and class 2 HBGFs may modulate some biological effects differently.

Notes: This paper describes the way in which an unsymmetric block Lanczos algorithm can be employed for approximate eigensolutions or dynamic response solutions for large systems having arbitrary damping and/or repeated (or closely spaced) eigenvalues. To reduce a square, unsymmetric matrix which may have repeated eigenvalues to block-tridiagonal form, an unsymmetric block Lanczos algorithm is developed. Right and left Lanczos vectors, generated by the reduction process, are employed to define the reduced-order model based on a discrete analytical model of general linear, time-invariant dynamic systems. A special type of starting vector is also introduced, which automatically includes the static displacement. This reduced-order model is employed to compute approximate eigenvalues/vectors and dynamic responses of the original system. To verify the proposed algorithm, examples of an 8-DOF beam-rotor system are provided for eigensolutions and dynamic responses due to step and random external forces. These examples showed promising results, indicating that the proposed algorithm is worthy of further study.
