Notes: Summary The first part of the paper deals with the constitutive relations of thermoelastic-plastic bodies during heat treatment when considering phase transformation on the basis of continuum thermodynamics. Interaction between temperature and metallic structures is carefully discussed to obtain the heat conduction equation including latent heat due to phase transformation. Applications of the theory to the cases of quenching and low-temperature-tempering are also presented. Structure and temperature distributions are numerically calculated by a finite element technique after determining the physical properties from the data of dilatation-temperature-time diagrams. Variations of stress and strain are also analysed. Calculated results of the transformation kinetics and residual stress are compared with experimental data for plain carbon and chromium steels measured by micrographs and both method of X-ray diffraction and Sachs' boring out technique, respectively.

Notes: Summary The compound 2-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-diethylaminophenol(Br-PADAP) was found capable of staining very small amounts of metals in tissue. This finding stemmed from the examination of the staining properties of pyridylazophenol analogs; 2-(2-pyridylazo)-phenol, 2-(2-pyridylazo)-5-dimethylaminophenol, 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol, 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol, and Br-PADAP. The unusually high sensitivity of Br-PADAP is attributed to the presence of an alkylamino group at the 5-position of the benzene ring. The presence of this alkylamino group forms a charged quinoid structure, and contributes resonance and optimum solubility to the hybrid by introducing a bromine atom into the pyridine ring. We report the staining results obtained from a variety of metals and the molar absorptivity of their metal chelates.

Notes: Abstract Particle removal by electro-osmotic flow was investigated by comparison with the removal by ordinary flow of water without electrokmetic effect. The relationship between adhesion and removal of particles in terms of force acting on the particle was also discussed. Experiments were carried out in an aqueous solution using nylon particles and a quartz plate. The adhesive force,F′ T, for the particles which adhered to the quartz plate in secondary minima in the total potential energy of interaction versus separation distance curves was calculated. Particle removal experiments were carried out applying electro-osmotic and Poiseuille flows. The hydrodynamic force,F d, which was required to remove particles from the plate was estimated using flow velocities. The effectiveness of electro-osmotic flow on particle removal was larger than that of Poiseuille flow. In the particle removal by electro-osmotic flow, the minimum of the ratioF d/F′ t for particle removal was found to be 50 and the ratio for removal efficiency of 0.5 was about 140.

Notes: Abstract The reliability of the Japanese public telephone facilities to transmit electrocardiograms (e.c.g.) for computer interpretation was assessed. The International Business Machine's (IBM) e.c.g. computer program by Bonner was used. No appreciable distortion of e.c.g. was observed following repeated transmission from hospitals separated by 1000 km. Thirty-four normal and 66 abnormal e.c.g.s. were transmitted twice. Identical results were observed in 97% of normals and 92% of abnormals. Following these fundamental experiments, 1236 patients' e.c.g.s. were transmitted for computer intepretation. The study showed that 98·6% (1219 cases) were technically satisfactory and 1·4% (17 cases) were not. The 17 unsatisfactory cases were classified into ten unreceivable data formats, six inconsistent measurements and one unacceptable noise level. The authors concluded that the Japanese public telephone facilities were acceptable for the transmission of e.c.g.s. for computer interpretation.
