Notes: Abstract Single crystals of Co1−x Fe x TiO3 (1⩾x⩾0) solid-solution were grown by the floatingzone method using a lamp-heated furnace. Boules averaged 7 mm diameter and 40 to ∼70mm long and were found to be homogeneous as to the value ofx in 80 to ∼90% of the total length. Atmosphere control, employing a mixed gas flow of CO2 and H2, was essential for obtaining high-quality cyrstals.

Notes: Abstract In order to clarify the direction of the easy axis of Co2B, we examined Co2B doped with 1 at %57Fe using Mössbauer spectroscopy. In the temperature range 4.2 K≤T≤r.t., two well resolved six-line patterns having equal intensity were observed. This shows that the easy axis lies in the c plane. The displacement of magnetically split absorption lines by quadrupole interaction also supports this conclusion. In the temperature region between 4.2 K and 1.6 K, the direction of the easy axis seems to begin to deviate from the c plane.

Notes: Abstract The experimental results obtained for various kinds of random mixtures with competing magnetic anisotropies are reviewed. We show that the nature of the phase transitions and the properties of the ordered phases in competing anisotropy systems are much different from those in pure systems.

Notes: Abstract Melanosomes from bovine eyes have been studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction as a function of temperature and of degree of hydration. The partially disordered structure of melanin is not modified by the interaction with the proteic matrix. The obtained values of 〈u2〉 indicate that high water contents stabilize the melanin structure, decreasing the amplitude of the atomic displacements.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer measurements have been made on a two-dimensional (2D) random mixture K2Ni1−x Fe x F4 with competing spin anisotropies. The concentration versus temperature phase diagram predicted by Oguchi and Ishikawa for mixed systems with competition between orthorhombic anisotropies has been shown to exist in K2Ni1−x Fe x F4. The coexistence of two kinds of Mössbauer spectra is seen in the transition regions, and is believed to be an intrinsic property of this system.
