Notes: Abstract New cyanato-copper(II) complexes of the type Cu(NCO)2 L 2 (L=2,3-, 2,5-, 3,4- or 3,5-lutidine, 3- or 4-ethylpyridine) and Cu(NCO)2 L (L=2,3- or 2,5-lutidine, 2-ethylpyridine) were prepared. Solid state electronic, ESR and IR spectral results show, that Cu(NCO)2 L 2 complexes have tetragonal structures varying from pseudooctahedral to practically planar forms, also involving a square-pyramidal arrangement. The β-form of Cu(NCO)2(2-picoline)2 was isolated and found to be a distortion isomer of the known α-form. According to physical results, Cu(NCO)2 L complexes exhibit highly distorted five-coordinate structures. Further knowledge about the influence of type, number and position ofL ligand alkyl groups on the structure-bonding properties of cyanato-copper(II) complexes was obtained.

Notes: Summary New cyanato-copper(II) complexes with aminopyridines (ampy) were prepared and studied;viz. Cu(NCO)2(3-ampy)2 (α- and β-form), Cu(NCO)2(3-ampy)2(H2O), Cu(NCO)2(4ampy)2, and Cu(NCO)2(2-ampy). According to physical results, the Cu(NCO)2L2 complexes exhibitpseudo-octahedral structures with amine nitrogens or cyanate oxygens occupying axial sites. For α- and β-Cu(NCO)2(3-ampy)2 the crystal structure reorganization is connected with a change in axial distortion. The compound Cu(NCO)2(2-ampy) is square pyramidal or — more probably — rhombic octahedral and its strong antiferromagnetism reveals the N-bridging function of the NCO groups.

Notes: Summary New coligand isomers of composition Cu{N(CN)2}2(pz)2 and Cu{pz · N(CN)2}2 (pz = pyrazole) were prepared and studied by measuring their magnetic susceptibilities up to 4.2K and by aid of their e.s.r., ligand field and i.r. spectra. The susceptibility data have been analysed with various models for the exchange-coupled copper(II) polymers. It is shown that the resultant exchange coupling is ferromagnetic for Cu{N(CN)2}2(pz)2 (J ∼ 1.1 - 1.4 cm−1) but antiferromagnetic for Cu{pz · N(CN)2}2 (J ≈ −0.4 cm−1). A polymeric chain structure is proposed for Cu{N(CN)2}2(pz)2 havingpseudo-octahedrally coordinated copper(II) and CN-bridging dicyanamide ligands. Its coligand isomer contains anionic chelate ligands, formed by nucleophilic addition between N(CN)2 and pz in the copper(II) coordination sphere, and giving with this central atom a square-planar system. Definite, but slight axial interaction takes place between these structure units.
