Notes: Soymilks were prepared from soybeans soaked in 15% ethanol and in 15% ethanol plus 0.1M NaOH, 0.1M Na2CO3 or 0.1M NaHCO3 for various times at 60°C. The ethanol was removed before processing the soybeans into soymilks, and the soymilks were analyzed for composition, lipoxygenase activity, TBA number, and flavor (paintiness, grassiness, nuttiness, cereal, and astringency). The change in paintiness with time of soaking did not depend only on lipoxygenase activity or on TBA number, but was related to the soaking conditions. Soaking in 0.1M NaOH gave soymilks with more paintiness than soaking in either 0.1M Na2CO3 or NaHCO3.

Notes: Soymilk was made less astringent by the addition of skimmed cow's milk (SCM), CaSO4 or citric acid. The additions of CaSO4 and citric acid were not sufficient to cause visible separation of soymilk solids, but there was some difference in mouthfeel due to the additions. Warm temperatures (65°C) of the soymilk resulted in a loss of astringency compared to sensory evaluation at room temperature or 4°C. Analyses for total polyphenols showed statistically significant decreases in apparent polyphenol content per gram of soymilk solids with the first level of addition of SCM, CaSO4, or citric acid but not with subsequent additions.

Notes: Microscopic examination of conventionally processed soybeans showed that flaking was sufficient to disrupt almost all of the cotyledon cells but had little effect on protein bodies or lipid bodies. Hexane extraction changed the surface of protein bodies from smooth to granular. Desolventizing-toasting was disruptive to cell walls and caused protein bodies to agglomerate.

Notes: [Auszug] The FeLV status of most cats with LSA was determined by the immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) test for FeLV performed on peripheral blood leukocytes using a multivalent rabbit anti-FeLV serum which detects FeLV gp70, p30, pl5, and pl2 (rf. 17); but an immunodiffusion test9, tissue culture ...

Notes: Abstract Four cases of congenital megacalycosis associated with ipsilateral segmental megaureter in children are presented. This association has not been emphasized, although review of the English and French literature revealed eight such cases. In all cases, the concurrent entities are unilateral, with a left-sided predominance and a male prevalence. The diagnosis of megacalycosis is presumed in four of the cases by normal function and prompt emptying of the calyceal systems on diuretic renography and/or urography. The presence of normal caliber renal pelvis interposed between the dilated collecting system and the distal dilated ureter without evidence of vesicoureteral reflux implies the coexistence of ipsilateral idiopathic megaureter. The patients usually present because of urinary tract infection and/or calculus formation, but respond well to conservative therapy.

Notes: Abstract In a collaborative study, 48 prepubertal boys with undescended testes ranging in age from 15 months to 11 years were treated with low-dose intranasal buserelin following an every-other-day programme for a period of 6 months. Urinary LH, FSH, and testosterone were not altered during the treatment period. Boys over 7 years of age experienced a slight but significant rise in testosterone at the end of treatment. Testicular descent was achieved in only 17% of boys. In the remainder, bilateral testicular biopsies were obtained during orchiopexy. Grouped analysis showed a significant increase in the number of germ cells per tubule in both unilateral and bilateral cryptorchid boys, suggesting that buserelin treatment of the testis in a cryptorchid position is capable of improving fertility potential. If time-matched controls are compared to treated boys of the same age, again a significant difference is observed indicating that buserelin treatment does increase the germ cell count.

Notes: Abstract One hundred and fifteen biopsies from unilateral cryptorchid prepubertal patients were embedded in Epon. Semithin sections were examined by light microscope and the germ cell count per tubule was calculated. The mean number of germ cells was normal from birth to 12 months of age and dropped below the lower limits of normal between 1 and 2 years. Germ cell counts rose considerably during the 18-months observation period with the highest counts occurring in the last 6 months. Variability in the clinical diagnosis of cryptorchidism or inherent heterogeneity in the testicular histology of cryptorchidism are possible explanations.

Notes: The optical absorption spectrum of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has been obtained in the wavelength range 570-780 nm via laser calorimetry (employing a dye laser source). Because of the low thermal conductivity of PMMA, the complete solution to the heat conduction equation (carried out numerically) was required in the analysis of the data. At the wavelength of minimum absorption (near 647 nm), the absorption coefficient had the value 153 dB/km.

Notes: The optical absorption coefficient of perdeuterated poly(methyl methacrylate) has been obtained by laser calorimetry at 568.2, 647.1, 676.4, and 752.5 nm. The lowest value of 18 dB/km is obtained at 647.1 nm. The dramatic effect of water uptake by the polymer on the total optical attenuation spectrum in the wavelength range 500-1000 nm has been investigated.
