    Notes: Strained-layer structures consisting of ∼30–35 nm Si1−xGex (x=0.16–0.29) and 33 nm Si deposited by molecular beam epitaxy on a (100)Si substrate have been amorphized by ion implantation at 40 K with 120 keV As+. Rutherford backscattering/channeling measurements using 2 MeV He+ ions have been used to measure the thickness of the amorphous layer and monitor the subsequent epitaxial regrowth occurring as a result of annealing at 560–600 °C. Angular scans across the {110} planar channels indicate that the initial crystallinity and strain was recovered for x=0.16; however, for x=0.29 crystal quality was greatly reduced and the coherency at the substrate-alloy layer interface was destroyed.

    Notes: Planar {110} channeling measurements with 1–2-MeV He+ ions have been used to investigate strained-layer structures of (100) GaAs/InxGa1−xAs/GaAs with x=0.07–0.17. Beam-steering effects in the surface GaAs layer are observed to have a major influence on {110} planar angular scans carried out in the InxGa1−xAs layers resulting generally in a double or more complex-shaped angular dip. A simple computer simulation has been developed which determines the main features of the experimental angular scan data. Comparison of simulation and experimental data allows a reasonable determination of the kink angle θK between the {110} planes for the surface GaAs and underlying strained layer. Only in limiting cases is it possible to unequivocally determine θK from the experimental data alone. They are as follows: (i) when θK=0; (ii) θK〉2ψ pc (ψ pc is the critical angle for {110} planar channeling); and (iii) when the thickness t of the top layer is thin (t(very-much-less-than)2d/ψ pc, where d is the {110} interplanar spacing).

    Notes: Abstract Samples of an Fe-6 at.% Al alloy were implanted with doses of 5×1016−3×1017 Al+ ions/cm2 at 100 kV, and subsequently oxidized at 1173 K in O2 gas at 27 kPa. By comparison with the behavior of unimplanted specimens, no effect on oxidation was observed if the dose of implant was less than 1×1017 Al+ ions/cm2. At doses of 1×1017 Al+ ions/cm2 or higher, a change in the oxide scaling morphology was effected from a duplex α-Fe2O3-α-Al2O3 scale to an α-Al2O3-enriched film with a dispersion of α-Fe2O3 nodules. Oxygen uptake by the high-dose samples was due principally to nodule formation and weight gains after 45 hr were lower by 50–70% as compared with the unimplanted material. Nucleation and growth of the nodules occurred only within the first 5 hr of reaction, but their presence acted as an upper limit on the benefits provided by implantation of aluminum. Nodule formation was shown to be characteristic of the oxidation properties of the alloy material, not an extraneous feature introduced by the implantation process itself. Surface preparation prior to implantation had little effect on oxidation: high-dose electropolished samples behaved similarly to mechanically polished samples when implanted to comparable doses.

    Notes: Abstract The contrast of a retinal image is less than that of the external stimulus owing to a process of optical degradation. Theoretical studies have shows that this affects the pattern and illuminance detectors of the retina differently and provides a new insight into the nature of contrast stimulation and the mechanisms responsible for the pattern electroretinogram. Consensus data on the optical transfer function of the eye are applied to the Fourier transform of the pattern stimulus and the retinal illuminance distribution is determined. The checkerboard image is shown to undergo substantial degradation for those check sizes used in experimental and clinical observations. Current concepts of contrast and modes of stimulation are examined and methods are described for quantifying the effects on stimulation of illuminance and pattern detectors. The findings are applied to experimental data on spatial tuning functions of electroretinograms elicited by checkerboard pattern stimulation. It is concluded that the signal predominantly originates from local illuminance, but that this can account for only part of the response with small check sizes. The remainder must be a highly selective response to spatial frequency. If the predicted degradation is accepted, a similar conclusion must be reached for many previously reported tuning functions of the pattern electroretinogram as well as to the present experiment on eight normal eyes.

    Notes: Abstract Pattern onset electroretinograms (PERGs) were recorded from four normal subjects. Square-wave gratings of 75% contrast were presented in three approximately contiguous, concentric zones of outer angular radius, 5.1°, 12.6°, and 23.6°. The zones were calculated to give equal numbers of ganglion cell receptive fields. The recorded PERGs were considered to include luminance and pattern components which have low and bandpass spatial tuning functions respectively. These components combine in the PERG to produce a broad spatial tuning characteristic. The amplitude of PERGs in response to low spatial frequency stimuli is widely reported to be linearly related to contrast. The retinal illuminance response at every spatial frequency was computed from the eye's modulation transfer function. This function characterizes the reduction in contrast that occurs because of optical degradation. The computed retinal illuminance response was subtracted from the PERG waveform and a pattern-specific response was revealed. The latter had a highly tuned bandpass function which peaked at higher spatial frequencies than the PERG at corresponding peripheral angles.
