    Notes: Abstract We present a measurement of the production of muon pairs in 194 GeV/c π−-tungsten interactions. A sample of 155,000 events with mass higher than 4.07 GeV/c2 has been used to determine the differential cross-section as a function of the scaling variables $$\sqrt \tau $$ andx F .

    Notes: Abstract The differential cross-section for dimuon production by 194 GeV/c π− onW, as measured by the NA10 Collaboration, is compared with theoretical models. The wide kinematical range of the data, extending well above the ϒ resonances, provides the opportunity of a comparison with ‘realistic’ Drell-Yan models, i.e. with those allowing for scaling violation in the hadronic structure functions. The data in fact clearly indicate the failure of the ‘naïve’ Drell-Yan model, while the available ‘realistic’ versions (leading logarithm approximation and next-to-leading logarithm approximation in first order QCD), although giving a better description of the data, still disagree in thex F and $$\sqrt \tau $$ dependences of the cross-section at high dimuon masses. This disagreement is referred to here as ‘anomalous’ scaling violation. The dependence of the results on external inputs (nucleon and pion-sea structure functions) is analysed; it is shown that in the next-to-leading logarithm approximation the value 〈K〉=1.03±0.03 (stat.) can be obtained for the ratio experimental/theoretical cross-section.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Untersuchung befaßt sich mit dem Ependym und der Makroglia des subfornikalen Organes von Galago crassicaudatus. Aus Rücksicht auf die anderweitige Verwendung des sehr seltenen Materiales konnte die Gold-Sublimat-methode von Cajal nicht angewendet werden. Die Faserglia erscheint in 2 Typen, den Astrocyten und Tanycyten (Horstmann). Beide bilden auch Gefäßfortsätze, die sich in typischer Weise der Wand der Gefäße anlegen. Eine Membrana limitans gliae perivascularis besteht demnach bei Galago; vielleicht jedoch nur an den größeren Gefäßen. Der Begriff “Tanycyten” wurde zur morphologischen Kennzeichnung eines Zelltypus verwendet, der sich klar heraushebt, über dessen Verhältnis zu den Astrocyten und Ependymzellen jedoch nichts ausgesagt wird. Mit Ependymzellen haben die Tanycyten die größte Ähnlichkeit. Die protoplasmatische Glia erscheint in einem eigenartigen, großkernigen und vielgestaltigen Zelltypus, der sich durch Armut an Cytoplasma und Mangel von Fortsätzen auszeichnet. Durch das Kernbild ist er sofort von anderen Zelltypen zu unterscheiden. Vielleicht sind diese Zellen mit den von Watermann am Meerschweinchen beschriebenen “Langzellen” verwandt. An den Parenchymzellen treten faserführende und faserlose Begleitzellen auf, die der Makroglia zugerechnet werden müssen. Satellitäre Mikroglia findet sich nicht. Dies ist wohl durch den Mangel typischer Nervenzellen zu verstehen.

    Notes: Summary Muscle fibers re commonly classified histochemically into three types by the staining intensity for myosin ATPase combined with those for metabolic enzymes. Preincubation at pH 4.6 gives rise to three staining intensities of myosin ATPase which are also used for fiber typing. The two classification systems were compared by computer analysis of the individual staining profiles of over 2,500 fibers, and found not to be equivalent. The analysis showed metabolic heterogeneity among the fiber groups distinguished according to their differences in myosin ATPase.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we introduce symplectic invariants for convex Hamiltonian energy surfaces and their periodic trajectories and show that these quentities satisfy several nontrivial relations. In particular we show that they can be used to prove multiplicity results for the number of periodic trajectories.

    Notes: Abstract Clarke has shown that the problem of findingT-periodic solutions for a convex Hamiltonian system is equivalent to the problem of finding critical points to a certain functional, dual to the classical action functional. In this paper, we relate the Morse index of the critical point to the minimal period of the correspondingT-periodic solution. In particular, we show that if the critical point is obtained by the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz mountain-pass theorem the corresponding solution has minimal periodT, that is, it cannot beT/k-periodic withk integer,k≧2. As a consequence, we prove that if the Hamiltonian is flat near an equilibrium and superquadratic near infinity, then for anyT〉0, the corresponding Hamiltonian system has a periodic solution with minimal periodT.

    Notes: Summary A conspicuous accumulation of taste buds occurs in the rostral part of the plica sublingualis (“frenal lamella”) of Alouatta and Aotus forming taste areas (area gustatoria) superficially situated in the oral mucous membrane. They are found in close vicinity to the orifices of the sublingual salivary glands, but are lacking in the aboral part of the plica sublingualis. They do not occur in all primate species studied. A taste area does not projects above the surface of the surrounding tissue like a papilla. The taste buds open not in crypts or furrows of the oral mucosa, but directly into the spatium sublinguale of the oral cavity proper. In the anterior part of the cavum oris proprium different kinds and very differentiated qualities of sensorial information are perceived (touch, taste, olfaction, temperature). It is conceivable that the taste areas play an important role in perceiving fresh saliva, together with the other sensorial structures in this part of the mouth. This problem can be solved experimentally and by behavioral studies. In addition to its topographical relation to the tongue, the organon sublinguale of Callicebus is structurally very similar to the plica sublingualis of Aotus and Alouatta. Since a sublingua does not occur in New World monkeys, it can be concluded that this organ represents a plica sublingualis which became adherent to the undersurface of the tongue.     Notes: Summary 6-Hydroxydopamine (6-OH-DA) has been shown to produce degenerative changes in noradrenergic nerve terminals and preterminals in the CNS following intracisternal, intraventricular or direct injection into the brain parenchyma. Systemic injection of 6-OH-DA is known to result in degenerative changes in noradrenergic terminals in the peripheral nervous system. However, only a few studies have been carried out on the effects of systemic injections of 6 OH-DA on noradrenergic terminals in the CNS. In the present study cynomolgus and squirrel monkeys were injected intravenously on two successive days with total doses of 350mg/kg and 150 mg/kg of 6-OH-DA, respectively, and sacrificed at 2 and 24 h following the second injection. Degenerative changes in the area postrema (AP) neurons in all injected animals were characterized by a generalized increase in electron density of cytoplasmic elements in axonal terminals and preterminals. Multilamellar bodies, clusters of clear and dense core vesicles, increased numbers of secondary lysosomes, and an increase in the number of glycogen granules were observed in these structures. In astrocytes the amount of glycogen increased markedly in injected animals, but no other glial alterations were observed. The number of mast cells in the AP was greater in injected than in noninjected animals, both in the perivascular spaces (PVS) and in parenchymal locations. Cell processes in the PVS were occasionally observed to contain electron dense bodies, and degenerative changes were seen in supraependymal processes in some injected animals.
