Notes: Abstract: The activity of adenosine deaminase (ADA) was determined in whole brain of rats at the embryonic age of 15 days through to adulthood and in nine brain regions in rats 1 day old through to adulthood. In 1-day-old rats, the highest activity was seen in olfactory bulbs (550 ± 15 nmol/mg protein/30 min) and this was 4.5-fold higher than that in the pons, which was the lowest. In adult animals, olfactory bulb still contained the greatest activity, which was about eightfold higher than hippocampus, which had the lowest. Except for hypothalamus, where ADA activity increased nearly twofold in rats between the ages of 1 and 50 days, significant decreases of as much as fivefold were found in whole brain, superior colliculus, cortex, hippocampus, cerebellum, olfactory bulbs, and olfactory nucleus. In contrast, ADA activity in pons and subcortex remained relatively constant throughout the developmental period. The Km values for ADA in whole brain at 18 days gestation (48 ± 5 μM) were not significantly different from that observed in adult rats (38 ± 7 μM), whereas the Vmax values decreased significantly from 339 ± 9 to 108 ± 8 nmol/mg protein/30 min. Taken together, the developmental patterns observed in the various brain regions appear not to correspond to any one particular process such as periods of rapid cell proliferation, cell death, synaptogenesis, or myelination. Nor do they correspond to known developmental profiles of transmitters, their receptors, or their metabolic enzymes. The complex changes in ADA activity during ontogenesis suggest an important role of ADA at very early stages of development as well as in specific regions of the adult rat brain.

Notes: At the onset or in the course of IgA nephropathy (IgA NP), upper respiratory tract infections and tonsillitis are often followed by periods of gross haematuria. In a search for possible abnormalities in the tonsillar IgA- and IgG-cell system, the palatine tonsils from seven patients with IgA NP and eight controls, all 15 suffering from chronic recurrent tonsillitis, were subjected to an immunohistochemical study. Compared with the controls, tonsils of NP patients contained a significantly (P〈0.001) increased proportion of IgA-producing cells (49.6% versus 35.7%). There was also an increase (P〈0.001) in the ratio of IgA polymer-(J-chain-positive) to monomer-producing cells in NP tonsils compared with controls (35.0% versus 18.8%). Although the tonsillar IgA cells were generally producing mainly IgA1, this subclass was even more predominant in NP tonsils (P〈0.03). These results are compatible with the hypothesis that in some patients with IgA NP, the polymeric IgA1 deposited in the mesangium may be of tonsillar origin.

Notes: [Auszug] Male Wistar rats (300-320 g) received unilateral 6-hyd-roxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesions of the NSP at the level of the lateral hypothalamus. After 25 d, the animals were killed and the striatum and SN were dissected out as previously described22. A small portion of the striatum was taken for tyrosine ...

Notes: Abstract Plasma factors influencing vascular PGI2-like activity (PSA) were studied in 45 patients with IgA nephropathy, 18 with Henoch-Schönlein purpura, including 8 children with nephrotic syndrome, and 41 controls. The results were compared with the levels of plasma high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and fatty acid components of plasma phospholipids. The plasma of 38 of 45 patients with IgA nephropathy and 14 with Henoch-Schönlein purpura showed a diminished ability or no ability to support PSA. Twenty-three patients with IgA nephropathy and 10 with Henoch-Schönlein purpura exhibited an inhibitory activity against PGI2 production. The plasma HDL level was lower, while the LDL level and the LDL/HDL ratio were significantly higher in IgA nephropathy and Henoch-Schönlein purpura cases than in the controls. A high LDL/HDL ratio was associated with a low plasma PSA. The levels of arachidonic acid and its precursor were not lower in the plasma of patients than in the controls. The decreased PGI2 synthesis may play an important role in the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy and Henoch-Schönlein purpura, but it can not be explained by reduced PG precursors. LDL may have an inhibitory, and HDL a protective effect on PGI2 synthesis.

Abstract: Zusammenfassung Die durch Organosilikongruppen substituierte Zellulose stellt einen neuen Typ modifizierter Zellulose dar.
Notes: Abstract Cellulose substituted by organosilicon groups represents a new type of modified cellulose. The silylation changes the physical and chemical properties of cellulose drastically. The thermoanalytical investigation of differently trimethylsilylated cellulose derivatives was carried out under static conditions in air atmosphere. The DTA curves of the cellulose used as starting material are different from those of its silylated derivatives. In the latter a new characteristic exothermic peak appears in the range 320–370°. The value of this maximum depends on the grade of silylation, being shifted towards higher temperatures with higher degrees of substitution.

Notes: Abstract It was proved experimentally that isotherms obtained from the results of isothermal thermogravimetric analysis are suitable for the characterization of silicone rubbers used in industry. The experimental results provide a possibility for the calculation of overall (apparent) reaction rate constants, characteristic of the thermal decomposition process, and for the calculation of half-life values in conjunction with the service life. Comparisons of the isotherms and of the characteristic calculated values demonstrated the effects of the parameters of silicone rubber preparation and of the conditions of application on the thermal stability.
