Notes: The feasibility of using myosin, extracted from post-rigor bovine muscle, as a binding agent for meat pieces, was examined. Crude myosin was extracted with solutions containing various concentrations of sodium chloride (salt) and sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP). Maximum yield was obtained using 1M salt and about 0.25% TPP in the extracting solution. Binding strength, i.e. the strength with which pieces of meat adhere, of crude myosin extracted with 1M salt and 0.15, 0.25 or 0.5% TPP were not significantly different and were only slightly lower than that for crude myosin extracted from pre-rigor muscle. The myosin preparations had binding strength much greater than that reported previously for actomyosin. These results show that crude myosin extracted from postrigor bovine muscle has a potential use as a meat binding agent.

Notes: The Project is working to produce a new course in Ancient Greek, directed at maturer students, and lasting one or two years. Its aim is to promote the fluent and intelligent reading of fifth- and fourth-century Greek, and Homer. The team, supported by a Steering Committee and Advisory Panel drawn from scholars and teachers in Great Britain, the United States, Australia and New Zealand, and Europe, started work in September 1974. The first half of the course has been produced and is being tested in some 35 schools and universities in Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States; the second half is currently being produced and will be used for the first time in the J.A.C.T. Summer School 1976, and after that in the testing institutions. The Project is due to end in August 1977, but it is hoped to finance a fourth year. We hope that, when published, the course will be available in the American and Australian/New Zealand markets: discussions with publishers over the cheapest possible methods of publication are currently being held.

Notes: Abstract The position of the gingival margin of the incisor and canine teeth, indicated by clinical crown height, was measured using a standardised photographic technique, in 30 dental students over a 3-year period. There was a progressive increase in mean clinical crown height during this period, suggesting that continual passive eruption of the teeth was occurring. There was a significant slowing in the rate of change over the period 1975–1977 for tooth 33, the reason for which is unknown.

Notes: abstract The dentitions of 439 rural and 192 urban black children aged 1–5 years were examined with mirror and probe. Denial caries was common and the percentage prevalence and dmft values were similar in children of 1–3 years in both groups. At 4 years of age there was a twofold increase in dental caries in the urban children to reach a dm ft score significantly greater than that in the rural children (P〈0.01). Labial caries was common in rural children but rare in urban children while rampant caries (dmft ≥5) exhibited the opposite pattern.
