    Notes: Reaction rates and saturation values were determined for H2 dissociative chemisorption on positive niobium cluster ions in an FT-ICR apparatus. Clusters with 8,10,12, and 16 atoms were found to be particularly unreactive, in remarkable agreement with the reactivity patterns observed previously for neutral niobium clusters. Saturation coverage for most clusters was found to occur near a hydrogen/niobium ratio of 1.3, although some clusters (8–12,16, and 19) reached effectively inert compositions at considerably lower coverages. Several examples were found of clusters having two isomeric forms with different reactivities. One form of Nb+19 was found to readily react with H2, whereas a second form representing one-third of the original sample of 19 atom clusters was completely inert to H2 chemisorption under the same FT-ICR conditions. The geometrical shape of these niobium clusters must therefore have a critical effect on reactivity.

    Notes: FT-ICR techniques were used to probe the surface chemistry of isolated silicon cluster ions in the 7–65 atom size range. Dissociative chemisorption reactions with NH3 were observed to proceed with rates which varied widely with cluster size. One particular cluster, Si+39, was found to be remarkably inert. Clusters with 20, 25, 33, and 45 atoms were found to be unreactive as well, while those with 18, 23, 30, 36, 43, or 46 atoms were quite reactive. Similarly oscillating reaction patterns were observed with CH3OH, whereas highly reactive free radical scavengers such as O2 and NO showed little selectivity. These results suggest the silicon clusters in this size range have well-defined structures which vary in ability to catalyze dissociative chemisorption at the surface.

    Notes: The nutritive values of propionic acid bacteria (Pb) grown in whey media as mixed cultures and as a 2-stage fermentation with a lactose-fermenting yeast (Y-Pb) were determined.Yields were 14 g of cells per liter for Pb cultures and 16 g/liter for Y-Pb fermentations. When the fermentation medium and cells were dried together, total solids equalled 28 g/liter. The BOD of the whey was reduced over 90% in both fermentations. Adequate yields of vitamins, particularly B12, were obtained in both fermentations. The in vitro enzymatic digestibility of the cultures was increased by mechanical disruption of cells; however, this cell breakage did not affect Biological Value (BV). The essential amino acid composition was equal to or better than the FAO Standard Reference Protein. The BV of the Y-Pb was 25% higher than Pb and 10–40% higher than other microbial cell masses, including Torula yeast, commercial yeast and BP yeast from n-paraffin.

    Notes: Summary Fetal septal transplants have been shown to promote behavioral recovery in young adult rats with aspiration fimbria-fornix lesions, rats with septal lesions and in intact aged rats. The present study examined the behavioral impact of intrahippocampal septal cell suspension transplants (T) in young female rats that had received, 10 days earlier, either medial fimbria lesions (Group FI.T), dorsal (subcallosal) fornix lesions (Group FO.T) or these two lesions together (Group FIFO.T). Relative to rats with lesions only (groups FI, FO and FIFO), grafted rats, irrespective of lesion locus, displayed unexpected impairments in (i) a serial alternation learning task, 5 weeks and 6 months after transplantation, and (ii) in a radial maze, 7 months after transplantation. In the first alternation test, Group FIFO showed impaired performance relative to Groups FI, FO and the sham-operated controls (Group S). In the second alternation test, Groups FO.T and FO showed impaired performance relative to Groups FI.T and FI, and only the performance of Group FI did not differ from that of Group S. In the radial maze, Groups FI, FO and FIFO all showed impaired performance relative to Group S. By contrast, there were no deleterious effects of lesions or of grafts in the acquisition and retention of a step-through passive avoidance task, 10 weeks after transplantation. Our findings on the effects of selective fimbria-fornix lesions did not confirm the report that rats with FI lesions but not those with FO lesions are unable to learn a serial alternation task, nor the report that FO lesions impair passive avoidance retention. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) histochemistry revealed that grafts were present but graft-derived innervation of the host hippocampus varied from extensive to almost non-existent in all transplant groups. AChE-positivity in the dorsal hippocampus (DH) was not related to behavioral performance. However, the grafts often grew to a considerable size within the host brain and in many rats, especially those in Group FI.T, produced moderate to extreme damage of the host DH. There was a significant positive correlation between errors in the radial maze and graft-induced DH damage but no relationship between errors and graft size. The results indicate that, after partial lesions of the fimbria-fornix, intrahippocampal septal grafts survive well but are likely to damage recipient structures and result in behavioral impairments.

    Notes: A model that continuously predicts the concentration of microorganisms in complex medium fermentations is suggested. The model uses carbon dioxide evolution as its primary input and assumes that respiration activity can be differentiated into growth-related and maintenance-related functions. This model can be programmed on computer-coupled vessels and used to standardize on a physiological fermentation inoculum transfer time. The cell concentration estimate can also be used to calculate specific growth rate and can be combined with additional monitored information to calculate other important fermentation parameters such as specific oxygen uptake.
