Notizen: Abstract The behaviour of individual Romney ewes in an open field was observed after intramuscular injection of isotonic saline or two doses of azaperone (0.5, 1.0 mg/kg) or acetylpromazine (0.1, 0.25 mg/kg). Azaperone significantly reduced the distance travelled, urination, and the time spent walking. However it increased nosing of the walls and floor (investigation). Azaperone also increased the numbers of sheep seen grazing and pawing and decreased the number heard vocalizing at least once. The only effect acetylpromazine had was to reduce the number of sheep heard vocalizing. The main results were interpreted as supporting a superior reduction of emotional behaviour by azaperone. It was therefore suggested that, as with pigs, azaperone might be useful for treating stress in sheep.

Notizen: Abstract Adult male mice from the substrains DBA/2JNmg and DBA/2J were individually placed into a novel environment and compared for nine behavioral components. The substrains differed in three vertically oriented exploratory acts, the latter showing the highest rates. On the basis of the breeding history of strain DBA/2, it is concluded that over the past years one or more mutations with an effect on behavior have occurred in at least these sublines of an old and widely used inbred mouse strain.

Notizen: Abstract Reactions to novelty, rearing and ambulation were observed in rats following saline or chlordiazepoxide injections either with or without prior drug experience. Drug suppression of the former two response was evident but there was no indication of prior drug experience being effective. However, experience appeared to negate the compound's depressant effect on ambulation shown by inexperienced subjects. It was concluded that inhibitory influences of chlordiazepoxide on reactions to novelty and rearing can not be ascribed to the aversive effects of a novel drug state.

Notizen: Abstract The area of deterioration in white birch stands adjacent to the Bay of Fundy overlaps with the area intercepting the often acidic “Fundy Fog” (mean pH 3.6 April to October). The fogs deposit substantial, and previously undetected, amounts of acidity (0.1 – 0.5 keq ha−1) which rival and may exceed the input by rain to the stands. Preliminary data (1987) suggest a relationship between fog acidity, nitrate levels (P〈0.01 and P〈0.05 respectively), and foliar browning occurring at each site. Acidity tends to increase inland, which may indicate rapid conversion of dissolved SO2 in fog droplets to SO4. The relationship with O2 was not significant at the 0.05 level. Browning is more extensive on older leaves, suggesting cumulative damage and increasing susceptibility to secondary attack by leaf spot fungus. Although the direct effect of ozone on browning is unresolved, its role in controlling fog chemistry warrants further investigation.
