    Notes: Photoionization spectra of clusters record a continuous distribution of ionization energies because each cluster has a different atomic arrangement at the moment of ionization. Using the technique of molecular dynamics we have generated photoionization spectra for (Cs2O)n clusters.

    Notes: Photoionization spectra of CsnOx clusters have been recorded for 15≤n≤130 and 1≤x≤10. We present a method of interpreting these spectra and a computer algorithm for their evaluation. Several features of these photoionization spectra support the spherical-jellium-background model.

    Notes: Cesium and cesium oxide clusters have been ionized in a one-photon process by means of a tunable cw dye laser and detected in a mass spectrometer. Mass spectra obtained using different photon energies and photoionization spectra of 7 metal and 86 oxidized metal clusters (in a mass range from 1 to 2024 amu and a maximum energy of 3.1 eV) are presented. Vertical ionization potentials were determined from the spectra. The interpretation of the ionization threshold is given in terms of the displaced harmonic oscillator model which leads to a relation between adiabatic and vertical ionization potentials (IP). The ionization energies of cesium clusters Csn decrease with cluster size. An unusually low IP was observed for the enneamer Cs9 and for the cesium monoxide Cs11O. With increasing oxidation of the cesium metal clusters the IP decreases (suboxides) reaches a minimum at Cs(Cs2O)n and then increases (superoxides).

    Notes: Mass spectra of metal-rich, singly and doubly ionized BanOx clusters are characterized by high peak intensities for n=13, 19, 23, 26, 29, 32, and 35 independent of the number of oxygen atoms (x=1,2,3,4). These values are identical to the magic numbers found for Ar clusters. The mass spectra of CanO show a similar behavior. Mass spectra of stoichiometric, doubly ionized [Ca(CaO)n]++ clusters are characterized by low peak intensities for n=14, 24, 32, 38, 40, 50, and 64. These values correspond to unstable clusters formed by the addition of one Ca atom or one CaO molecule to a closed rectangular block of atoms with rock salt structure.

    Notes: In view of the supposition that a dolphin can swim faster than would be predicted based on its physical features and presumed muscle power potential, studies were initiated to reevaluate the assumptions made in reaching these conclusions. Several previous studies have shown that the architectural and histochemical properties of a skeletal muscle dictate its force, velocity and displacement properties. This study examined the muscle fiber lengths and tendon arrangements of the dorsal and ventral axial muscles in dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). Fiber type and fiber size distributions were determined to reflect the general biochemical characteristics of the musculature. The dorsal muscles had a higher mean fiber length (167 Vs. 90 mm) and the range within and across different dorsal muscles was less (141–199 vs. 37–185 mm) than in the ventral muscles. Both the dorsal and ventral muscles consisted of an overall mean of 50 percent slow twitch and 50 percent fast twitch fiber types. The fast twitch fibers were 67 percent larger (2,200 vs. 1,317 μm2) than the slow twitch fibers in the ventral and 38 percent larger (1,213 Vs. 879 μm2) in the dorsal muscles. In addition, the mean cross sectional area of the fibers in the ventral muscles was approximately 65 percent greater (1,750 vs. 1,072 μm2) than those in the dorsal muscles. The shorter, larger-diameter fibers of the ventral musculature give it a greater potential for force production for a given amount of muscle mass. In contrast, the dorsal muscles appear to be designed to optimize velocity and displacement, (i.e., longer fibers). These findings contribute to the information necessary for the determination of the power potential of the musculature of the dolphin.

    Notes: Compound clusters composed of two metallic elements have been produced by allowing the elements to react in the vapor phase. The composition of the clusters could be varied by changing the relative partial pressures of the two vapors. Mass spectrometry indicates that clusters with certain well defined compositions are particularly stable. For example, in the Cs–Sn system, mass peaks corresponding to (Cs3Sn2)+, (Cs3Sn5)+, (Cs5Sn4)+, and (Cs5Sn9)+ are unusually strong. Other metallic systems discussed are Pb–Cs, Pb–In, Pb–Sr, Pb–In, and In–Cs. In another series of experiments each of these elemental metallic vapors was allowed to react with phosphorus vapor. In this way the relative stability of the various phosphide clusters could be tested. For example, (Cs4P7)+ and (Cs3P4)+ are shown to be particularly stable. The probable structures of some of the intermetallic and phosphide clusters are presented.
